If a working mom agrees to stay at the office late to work on a project, people ask, “What about dinner with your family? Who is making them dinner?” If a working dad stays late at the office, people may ask if he misses dinner with the family, but they don’t accuse him of neglecting his family.

Some days, you proudly make your child a lunch, only to have a parent inform you the school no longer wants such-and-such food on the premises because it contains some ingredient that was found by some vague study to be a little bit toxic. You’re evil, of course, because you don’t stay up to date with every single mommy blog announcing this.

If a working mom is late, it’s because of her kids, and it’s a problem. She needs to get her act together. She needs to tighten up the carpool schedule. She needs to wake up earlier to make it all work.

When you ask for a raise, people may begin to whisper that, of course, you want more money now that you have a child. But, first of all, it’s not their business what you need the money for—if you deserve a raise, then you deserve one. And second off, it’s better to spend money on your child than on, say, plastic surgery or designer shoes as some people do.
