We’ve all gotten that friend request from a second cousin or aunt and thought, “This is not good.” They just think it’s fun to follow what’s happening in your life, but you have intentionally curated and edited what you show them about it.
Social media can be informative and fun, and the connections we make using the various platforms can expose us to amazing people, businesses, and opportunities. At the same time, it can also be a source of foolishness and downright annoying behaviors we can do without.
Do you remember when holiday and summer breaks felt like this eternity when you and all of your classmates went off into different dimensions, completely unaware of where the other was or what they were up to? And you got the chance to explore other parts of your personality, outside of your classmate’s expectations or ideas of you. You went to summer camp with other kids or went on a cruise with your family and got to reinvent yourself with the kids you met there.
Some couples really overdo it. You know who you are. Every day or at least several times a week are these photo collages of them and their boo and four-page essays on their love. They really give posting about relationships a bad name.
Even if it’s just perceived competition, we get a closer look—for the worse. If your partner has a coworker who you think has a small crush on him, you can look her up. You can see all of her hot bikini pics. You see the emojis she puts on his status updates. The jealousy becomes enraged.
You are welcome to share whatever you need to with the world. But sometimes when we’re emotional we share things with social media that we later wish only our close circle knew.
