An author of more than 25 books, Giovanni was a natural-born writer and performer. Her poetry collections have sold thousands of copies, leading to invitations to some of the biggest television shows, including The Tonight Show.

Nikki Giovani, the legendary and award-winning poet, author and activist whose career spanned nearly 60 years, has died. She was 81. The cause of death was cancer, according to WDBJ, which first reported Giovanni’s passing on Monday night.

The world-renowned writer and educator dedicated the last 35 years of her career to teaching English at the distinguished university.
