This year marks the 60th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” a moment that marked a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.

March 7, 1965, is known as Bloody Sunday after hundreds of people peacefully marched from Selma to Montgomery but were violently attacked.

For many Black folks, celebrating these opposed historical figures on the same day is wildly ironic and makes me feel unsettled. So, I cannot help but wonder if Dr. King’s soul was able to rest easy last night.

We thought we'd celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this day of observance by highlighting the work of a few of the women he collaborated with during the civil rights movement.
