Lillian Miles Lewis was born Lillian Miles in Los Angeles, California in 1939. She was an educator, political adviser, and wife of congressman John Lewis.
Following her husband's murder, Shabazz raised her six children alone and did not remarry. She enrolled in Jersey City State College where she completed her undergraduate degree and would go on to earn a master's degree in public health administration and a doctorate degree in higher education administration from the University of Massachusetts.
Anna Murray Douglass played an essential role in the abolitionist movement, but sadly, due to colorism and other issues, did not receive the recognition that she deserved.
Marcus Garvey married twice in his lifetime and although his personal life is marred by a bit of scandal, we thought it was important to highlight both of his wives for their contributions to the movement and Black culture.
