Travel Trials: My Boyfriend Can’t Make The Birthday Trip We Planned; Can I Go Without Him?

My boyfriend and I planned a five-day vacation to Paris for his birthday about three months ago and now suddenly our plans are ruined. Despite already getting the time off approved at work, my boyfriend’s company just landed a new client with a major launch the same week we were planning our getaway next month and his boss basically reneged on the approved vacation request and said he needs all hands on deck.
Although my boyfriend’s boss told him he could take time off two weeks after our planned trip, I’ll no longer be able to take that much vacation time because my boss will be out on maternity leave for the next three months. This birthday trip was literally planned at the perfect time and now I don’t know what to do.
Because we booked non-refundable hotel rooms to get a cheaper deal, my boyfriend told me I should still go away so we don’t totally lose all of our money, especially since he’ll be swamped with work that week anyway. As tempted as I am, I feel like he might secretly resent me for going away without him — plus going to Paris alone isn’t exactly the romantic escape I had in mind.
Though I’m more than overdue for a vacation right now, I’m not sure if I should just see this trip through or wait for our schedules to magically match again down the line and postpone. What would you?
