Your body detoxifies itself constantly, all day long. Essentially, detoxification is the process by which your body gets rid of matter and toxins it doesn’t need or want. Your body has several systems that do this, including the colon, liver, kidney, lungs, and even skin. But, like all of your body’s systems—from your immune system to your digestive one—your detox system can use a little boost sometimes. When you talk about a detox program, it will typically involve A) limiting the amount of toxins you introduce into your body and B) Improving the function of organs that remove toxins. Detoxification habits aren’t something you only need to do a couple times a year. While some more intense regiments should be done sparingly (like juice cleanses) there are gentle ways you can help your body eliminate toxins every single day. Here are simple ways you can detox daily.

Add berries to your breakfast

Strawberries in your cereal, raspberries on toast, blueberries in your oatmeal—it’s pretty easy to add berries to breakfast food, and when you do, you start your day with a superfood.

Switch up your water temperature

Exposing your body to hot, then cold, then hot, then cold water is called hydrotherapy. But you don’t need a fancy spa to do it for you; you can do this in your shower! The process improves circulation and helps with waste elimination.

Clean your mouth thoroughly

This means not just brushing your teeth twice a day (preferably with an electric toothbrush) but also flossing and scraping your tongue daily. Germs can sit between your teeth and on your tongue and make their way back into your body, introducing toxins to your system.

Workout

Perhaps you’re one of those lucky individuals who has a perfect figure and doesn’t need to exercise to look good. And maybe you even, somehow, ace your physical exams each year—blood work and all—without exercising. But there’s one thing you cannot do if you don’t exercise and that is work your lymphatic system, which you need to do to detox.

Sweat

Speaking of working out, that’s an activity that helps you detox in more ways than one because it also helps you sweat! When you sweat, your body releases toxins. But you can sweat in plenty of ways, like hitting up your gym’s sauna or steam room.

Buy a trampoline

Trampolines aren’t just for little kids; they’re detoxification tools! Jumping up and down boosts your lymphatic system and your circulation, and doing so on a trampoline makes it easy on your joints.

Sleep during regular hours

Sleeping regular hours means going to bed sometime before midnight and getting up sometimes before 9 am. Why these hours? Because your liver does its best detoxifying work early in the morning but only if it’s had plenty of deep rest leading up to that. Meanwhile, sleeping too late can throw off your bowel movements.
