Last night’s Oscar red carpet was pretty impressive, but we were pleasantly surprised when we saw all the showstopping ensembles that came after the telecast ended. At the annual Vanity Fair Oscar party, a who’s who of stars, including many who passed on attending the actual award ceremony, stepped out in their Sunday night best to have some fun. From leaving behind long gowns for slinky dresses and showing off some skin, to switching out stilettos for platform dress shoes, these stars enjoyed the night’s festivities in velvet, fishnet material, sequins and more. That includes your favorites: Kerry Washington, Tracee Ellis Ross, Halle Berry, Viola Davis and many, many others. These are the looks that had us saying that the after-party red carpet might have been better than the Academy Award red carpet.

Gabrielle Union
The Being Mary Jane star stunted on everybody in this revealing blue and black Jean Paul Gaultier number.

Naomie Harris
The Oscar nominee swapped her more casual Calvin Klein gown worn at the ceremony for this one-shoulder gown, also a Calvin Klein creation.

Thandie Newton
The Westworld star was a haute couture hottie in this Elsa Schiaparelli look. Love all the accouterments on it.

Ciara
While people tried to compare Ciara’s Vanity Fair Oscar party look to Beyoncé’s Grammys dress, we love this velvety look on the mom to be. Not to mention that the makeup is quite flawless.

Janelle Monaé
After slaying on the Oscar red carpet in Elie Saab, the Moonlight and Hidden Figures star continued her awards season domination at the after-party in Alexandre Vauthier Couture.

Viola Davis
The beauty left behind her gorgeous Armani Privé gown to be comfortable in this Brandon Maxwell suit and platforms.

Halle Berry
The outfit changed but the hair stayed the same. Still, both Berry’s Oscar gown and her Vanity Fair after-party dress were Atelier Versace numbers.

Tracee Ellis Ross
Ross didn’t go to the Oscars, but she showed up at the Vanity Fair after-party in this stunning Zuhair Murad ensemble.

Kerry Washington
The Scandal beauty looked pretty fabulous in this structured Michael Kors number (and yes, hubby Nnamdi Asomugha was in the house).

Mary J. Blige
The newly single singer showed off her toned body in a Galia Lahav Haute Couture dress.

Ruth Negga
The Loving star and Oscar nominee left her red Valentino gown at the hotel and stepped into Oscar de la Renta.

Zoe Kravitz
The chic star of Big Little Lies managed to shine in a black Armani Privé gown and bleach blond hair.

Mariah Carey
We didn’t see Carey’s boyfriend Bryan Tanaka, but she made herself the center of attention in this colorful cleavage-baring Phillip Plein dress.

Rashida Jones
The beauty celebrated her birthday weekend at the after-party while rocking this gorgeous Prada dress.

Gabby Douglas
The Olympic gold medalist showed she cleans up nicely in this classy black gown.

Joan Smalls
Does the supermodel ever disappoint? She looked like a dream in Brandon Maxwell.

Chanel Iman
Another runway stunner, Chanel Iman showed up at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in Zuhair Murad.
