Fried, Dyed And Laid To The Side: Photos Of Vintage Black Hair

Don’t you just love vintage photos of Black people?

I sure do, especially during Black History Month. And after flipping through some of my favorite Tumblr pages and social media sites (shout out to Vintage Black Glamour and Hollywood Ric!), I ran across a bevvy of images of Black people from the late 1800s up to the ’90s showing Black women displaying their crowning glory — their hair. I’m talking styles that were fried, dyed and laid to the side, huge curls, waves, braids with beads, locs and more. Black women, for as far back as folks have been snapping our pictures, have done some pretty amazing things with our hair. We’ve been making miracles atop our heads even before Madam C.J. Walker hooked us up and before there were today’s expensive products to buy that help us tame and style it. If you need some proof of that, check out a few lovely images of vintage Black hair.
