You know you’re not going to die from a cold or the flu. But that doesn’t change the fact that it sure feels like you will when it’s happening! A partner really shows his true colors when you are sick. Anybody can be a rockstar boyfriend when their girlfriend is energized, perky, up for sex, and willing to help make dinner. The real test comes when a man’s girlfriend is laid up in bed, cranky, unwilling to make conversation and incapable of physical contact. Does your boyfriend fill up his schedule so he can avoid the responsibilities that come with having a sick partner? Or, does he stay by your side? You certainly are there for him when he has the sniffles or a broken arm, so shouldn’t he be there for you? Here is what the best boyfriends do when you’re sick.

They keep you company
They don’t make plans to go out because “You’re just going to lay in bed all night anyways.” Great boyfriends know that being home sick can get lonely! And just having someone there to talk to when you get a rare ten minutes of energy makes all the difference.

They get you soup
Not just one little can. Oh no; they go to the store and call you to describe every soup option there. They know how tired you are of soup, but how good it is for you, so they want you to at least get one you’re excited about.

They don’t get grossed out
They don’t look away when you have snot running down your nose; they give you a tissue and think you’re adorable.
They don’t find another movie date
They don’t ask their friend to go to the movies with them because you can’t anymore. If you can’t go, they’re not going. They’ll wait until you’re better so you can go together as planned.

They buy more medicine than you need
They don’t ask you what you need because they know you feel bad handing them a grocery list. Instead, they just buy the whole damn pharmacy.

They don’t let you pay them back
They buy you medicine and soup and tissues when you’re sick, and you do the same for them when they’re sick. That’s just how it works.

They draw you a bath
Aaaah. There is nothing like a nice warm bath with some essential oils to loosen up your mucus when you are sick. Good boyfriends draw you a bath, even if they don’t really know how to.

They understand that you’re not showering
They don’t get on your case about the fact that you haven’t showered in two days. They know you’re just going to sweat through the clean anyways, and that standing up in a shower for ten minutes is strenuous when you’re sick. Hence the bath.
They bring you everything
They don’t call you lazy for asking them to bring you a cup of water from the other room. They know how miserable it can feel just to walk to the kitchen when you’re shaking from a fever.

They do your dishes
You know what else sucks to have to do when you’re shaking with a fever? Dirty dishes! A good boyfriend brings you your soup in bed and takes the bowl away when you’re done.

They’re there for the dog
You shouldn’t be exercising, let alone outside when you are sick. Your boyfriend plans his day around being home when the dog needs to go out so that you don’t even think about taking him.

They take it more seriously than you do
They suggest taking your temperature every three hours, and they offer to take you to the doctor to make sure it isn’t something more serious. They don’t call you dramatic for wondering if you’ve developed bronchitis.

They watch whatever you want
This is not the time to argue over what you’re watching on Netflix. He knows you’ll both be watching what you want—even if it’s reruns of Golden Girls—because you need all the comfort, you can get.

They are very, very quiet
They understand that nothing helps you get better like sleep which is why they put a sign on the front door telling people to text them rather than knock when they come over. They don’t want a knock to send the dog barking and waking you up.

They don’t try to have sex
Repeat: They DON’T TRY TO HAVE SEX. I mean, are you serious? Good boyfriends just borrow some of the many tissues they bought their girlfriend for her sniffles and, um handle themselves.

They put your robe nearby
Good boyfriends make sure you have a robe nearby, so you never have to get out of bed and be cold for long. In fact, they make sure you have everything nearby including a trash can and your cell phone in case you need to call them from the other room.
They do your chores
Good boyfriends understand that their sick girlfriend cannot take out the trash, clean the floors and wipe down the surfaces this week—even if it’s her turn. They do it for her, and they don’t ask for a thank you.

They ask how you’re doing, a lot
Even though they know the answer won’t change much from hour to hour and even though they know it’s just a cold, they ask how you’re doing all of the time. Why? Because they know just being asked feels nice.

They help with the cleanup
Being sick usually results in a mess. There is a lot of laundry to be done, doorknobs to be sanitized, and recyclable soup containers to be taken out. Good boyfriends don’t consider that your job since you’re the one who got sick; they help you with it.

They stay healthy
Hey, how are they supposed to take care of you if they get sick?! Good boyfriends sleep in the other bedroom or on the couch so as to not catch what you have. While they’re very sweet, they don’t kiss or hug you at this time.
