There’s generosity, patience and a willingness to compromise in a relationship, and then there is just straight-up spoiling your partner. It can happen to the best of us. Men go into relationships with perfectly good intentions—intentions that have to do with working hard and selflessness—but then, they just get a little too used to having nothing demanded of them. It’s a testament to what a totally awesome partner you are, but it also needs to stop. Here are signs that you’ve spoiled your partner to the point of no return. (Well, hopefully, there is some chance of return because it’s getting annoying!)

If he can’t eat where he wants, he’ll get takeout

You almost always eat where he wants to eat. If by some miracle, you talk him into going to your place, he just has water there…and picks up food from his place later. God forbid he should have to get into the spirit of things and enjoy the restaurant you chose.

He panics a little when you have girls’ night

He really doesn’t like the idea of you being totally unavailable for an entire night. You’ll be unavailable to listen to him complaining about his boss, unavailable for sex, and unavailable for preparing snacks.

He panics a little if you don’t answer the phone

If you always stop what you’re doing to take his calls—like you’ve never missed a call from him—he’ll become pretty spoiled. Later, if you do miss a call, he’ll begin to text you and say “It’s urgent” when really, he just wants to know how long the pasta sauce needs to be reheated.

And for a snack

He texts you from the other room for snacks, toilet paper, his cell phone, and just about anything you can imagine.

If you don’t buy groceries, nobody does

You’ve tried, as an experiment, not to buy groceries for a week. He never refilled the refrigerator. He panicked, complained there was no food, ordered pizza, and drove right past a grocery store the next day.

If you don’t make plans, nobody does

If you do not reach out to friends, look up concert schedules and crosscheck calendars, the two of you would literally do nothing. Your partner has begun to rely on you to be his social coordinator.

You’re always the designated driver

For some reason, it’s always so important that he gets to drink, like, “But my best friend is in town!” or “You have to get up early anyways and I don’t!” He’s full of reasons why you should drive and doesn’t have one reason why you should get to let loose.

He doesn’t come to your events

He never comes with you to museums or shows or parties you’re interested in. You usually hand him excuses not to come. You start sentences with, “I know you probably won’t want to, and you’re exhausted but if you want to come with me…” You just feed him an out.

He can’t go to his events without you

He doesn’t come to your events. Meanwhile, if you can’t accompany him to his, he begins to whine, tell you he won’t have any fun without you, and ask, “What’s so important that you can’t come with me?!” Funny that he never asks himself the same question about your events.

When he wants to have sex, he just says so

He just looks over from his spot on the couch, grins a little, and says, “Wanna?” No more seduction; no more making out.

Your friends don’t know him very well

Your friends often ask where he is and who he is. Why? Because he always has an excuse not to come out with your friends, and you’re the one who gave him those excuses.

Your family doesn’t know him very well

Your family also drops hints about not knowing your significant other very well. Your family may be annoying and dramatic, sure, but they are your family so the fact that they are annoying and dramatic shouldn’t be a reason for your partner to sit out every dinner.

He expects you to read his mind

If he comes home from a very long day and finds that you have girlfriends over and haven’t made anything to eat, he says something like, “Didn’t you know I’d be tired, want the place to myself, and not have time to cook?”

His version of helping out is cracking jokes

When you clean the apartment, he sits on counters eating, making jokes, and saying he’s motivating you by making you laugh. Sure, buddy.
