How bad can it really be to get carried away after a first date? It’s not like your date actually knows all of the things going on in your head (or all of the things you’re telling your friends), right? Well, yes, but your thoughts and words can affect you, too.

If you let yourself go down a certain train of thought, or talk too much about a guy, you can set up expectations for yourself subconsciously. You’ll probably stop considering other guys much, and possibly pass up on a great one! All for what? A guy you’ve been on one date with? Statistically speaking, most first dates don’t turn into relationships; it’s a numbers game, and if you cut back on your first date numbers because one went well, you will probably lose the game. Here are signs you get too carried away after a good first date.

You cancel other dates

You had other dates you were really looking forward to, but you cancel them, because you feel, “What’s the point? I know I already really like this one guy.”

You cancel your online dating subscriptions

You know that means you lose the six-month coupon you were using, and that all the guys in your inbox might be taken by the time you come back. But you don’t think it matters since you’ve found your dream guy.

You go back on birth control

You presume this will become a full-blown relationship so you should probably just get back on birth control already.

You talk about it too much

A first date deserves about fifteen minutes of talk—not two hours. You shouldn’t dominate drinks with your girlfriends, with a conversation about your first date. They have things they want to talk about, too.

You tell your landlord you may be leaving

Your lease is up in six months, and you tell your landlord you may not renew it since you have a hunch you may be moving in with somebody.

You tell your mom to save space

You tell your mother to make room at the table for Christmas because you’ll probably be bringing a plus one.

You ask for a plus one

Speaking of plus ones, you ask if you can bring one to your friend’s wedding—all because this one date went well.

You start giving relationship advice

You start giving relationship advice, based on how you carried out that one good first date.

You start stalking his social media, his business website, and everything about him on Google. You’re also stalking his dating profiles to see if he’s been active since your first date.

You hesitate to travel

You won’t pull the trigger on booking a flight or cruise with friends because, well, you may want to spend those vacation days with the guy you just had one date with.

You shop for him

You buy groceries he mentioned he liked, in anticipation of having him over sometimes in the future. You haven’t actually set a date for that, though.

You go on a shopping spree

You get a little credit card happy, thinking of all the dates you’ll go on and all of the outfits you’ll need for those.

You won’t go out with your friends

“I don’t need to go out to bars and talk to guys,” you say. “I’m already dating someone.”

You say you’re dating someone

Oh yeah—you’ve started to say you’re dating someone. Or seeing someone. Or hanging out with someone. It was one date.

You won’t take a setup

Your friends want to set you up on a blind date, but you believe that would be disrespectful to the guy you just had a great first date with.

You set up a double date

You plan a double date with your friend and her boyfriend (or several friends and their significant others) with the intention of bringing your new guy. You have not discussed this with him yet.

You talk about how good it is not to date anymore

You say things like, “I’m so glad I don’t need to deal with the dating pool anymore” or “Gosh I remember how rough it could be out there.” As if you’ve been with this guy for years.

You try to make someone jealous

You try to tell an ex, or some friend who you know has it out for you, that you’re “Seeing someone now, so you don’t need their pity.”

You won’t stop thinking about him

It’s interfering with your work, your friendships, your family and more. You’re extremely distracted—you can’t focus on anything else but this first date. That is getting carried away.
