When the Bough Breaks hits theaters on Friday, September 9. It stars Regina Hall and Morris Chestnut as Laura and John Taylor, a successful, married couple who are desperate to have a child. Unable to conceive naturally, they turn to a surrogate, Anna, played by Jaz Sinclair. She seems innocent, but really, the young woman is anything but. She tries her best to seduce John, and eventually becomes obsessed with him. And her obsession might turn deadly, lest John does something to stop Anna before it’s too late. This psychological thriller, rated PG-13, is very much in the vein of The Perfect Guy, No Good Deed and Obsessed. Romany Malco and Michael K. Williams round out the cast. Introducing…
Who is Jaz Sinclair? Prior to playing Anna in When The Bough Breaks, the 22-year-old actress was seen in Paper Towns, along with The Get Down star Justice Smith. When the Bough Breaks is Sinclair’s breakout role, but according to co-star Theo Rossi, who plays her fiancé, she’s a “veteran” who has the process of an actor who’s been around for a long time.

Fourth Times a Charm

Projection
Sony Screen Gems is the studio behind this $10 million film. The studio has made a conservative estimate as to how much money the film will make opening weekend. That number? $12 million. But let’s not forget that such analyses often underestimate Black moviegoers. That was the case last year for Straight Outta Compton, a so-called surprise hit.

Universal Story
One of the things that attracted both Regina Hall and Morris Chestnut to When the Bough Breaks is the fact that the script was not written with any race in mind. Also, infertility is very much a universal issue that knows no race or ethnicity.

It’s Not What You Think
In an interview with The Breakfast Club, Hall was quick to inform folks that When the Bough Breaks is not the kind of movie you think it is. Meaning, it has a life and a story all its own, separate from other thrillers about crazed men and women desperate for another person’s life that people are quick to compare it to.

Comedy to Drama
We typically see Hall in comedic films, so it’s nice to see her in a more dramatic role. She stated that her preparation for the role of Laura was the same as it would be for any other film. “This [role] just required me to tackle a lot more emotional energy,” she told Variety.
