We’ve all been obsessed with our girls since we got them. Whether we prayed for them to come in, spent hundreds on bras to prop them up, or prayed for gravity to leave them in peace, they’re always on our minds. And maybe that’s why we’ve all heard — and believed — these breast myths at one time or another.

As it turns out, a lot of what we heard about our twins growing up wasn’t right at all. From sleeping in our bras to spending money on plumping lotion, there are a lot of rituals that the following studies want us to throw right out of the window.

Breastfeeding Causes Breast Sagging

It’s time to take the blame off of the babies. One study found that breastfeeding isn’t the cause of breasts sagging, but rather, pregnancy is. When your breasts shrink back down after pregnancy, they’re bound not to be as perky as they used to be.

Lose Weight and Your Boobs Will Shrink

Tons of weight-loss research has revealed that if you gain weight or shrink, your breasts are likely to stay in proportion to the rest of you. Unfortunately, there’s no way to target just one body part.

Bras Help You Fight Gravity

At least according to these studies, there’s just no point in keeping on a bra overnight. They won’t stop nature’s course or even slow it down.

But sports bras do fight against sagging by keeping bounce in check during workouts.

You Can Perk Them up with a Workout

Remember those “must increase my bust” exercises we all did in middle school? Turns out they weren’t doing much. Breasts don’t have any muscle in them, so you can’t really work them out. However, you can buff up the pectoral muscles beneath them to elevate your breasts and balance out the effects of gravity.

That’s not necessarily true. They may sag less because they don’t have much hang time. But everyone looses a little perk as time goes on.

There’s Nothing You Can Do to Stop Sagging

You actually can prevent sagging from doing its worst by maintaining a healthy body weight. Gaining and then losing a lot of weight stretches your breasts, making it harder for them to snap back.

Has anyone else heard that smaller breasts are less likely to get cancer? The theory goes, less breast tissue, less breast trouble. But breast cancer actually starts around the milk ducts, which breasts of all sizes have around the same amount of.

Have you heard the myth that eating soy or drinking more whole milk can boost you up a cup size? No food targets your breasts alone. If it did, some of us would be consuming it at every meal.
