Have you ever noticed that when publications come up with a list of some of the best bridal gowns and moments from TV shows, they rarely make mention of Black brides?
I’m getting married in about two months, and while perusing the Internet earlier, I tried to look through a slideshow online from a popular bridal magazine listing the best TV wedding dresses. I was intrigued. Sadly, per the usual, everyone mentioned was White. I guess I can understand it. Many of the Black TV show characters we have loved over the years, specifically the women, weren’t necessarily known or given much credit in the mainstream for their style (aside from maybe Denise Huxtable and Hilary Banks). Still, I couldn’t help but to think that it would be nice to see some Black brides and the fabulous dresses they’ve worn over the years during our favorite wedding episodes.
When you can’t find it, make it. So here you go:
Angie Baxter on All My Children
When daytime television’s first Black super couple remarried in 2008, they were able to have quite the luxurious ceremony — one their characters weren’t able to pull off the first time around after saying “I do” in front of the justice of the peace. Angie made her entrance as Ne-Yo sang wearing this gorgeous, corset-adorned, off-the-shoulder number.
Whitley Gilbert on A Different World
It was the quintessential ’90s dress for our favorite stylish Southern belle. Hence all the sequins, the immensely long train and the pretty fly veil. Whitley looked absolutely fierce as she said no to Byron and “I do” to Dwayne.
Francesca Monroe on The Jamie Foxx Show
After years of loathing Jamie, who knew Fancy and Jamie would actually get married during the series finale? She exchanged vows with him while wearing this very unique and very gorgeous wedding gown. It featured a netted top with sleeves over a strapless gown that had a low-cut back. I loved it.
Thelma Evans on Good Times
Everything about Thelma’s wedding was emotional. From JJ walking her down the aisle in place of her father, to Michael killing it while singing “You and I” by Stevie Wonder, you would have thought they were your real family as much of a tearjerker as this scene was for people. That dress, with its mix of satin and intricate detailing, and that beautiful headpiece for the veil? Gorgeous.

Lisa Wilkes and Hilary Banks on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
We were sad when Will and Lisa didn’t work out. They were quite the cute couple. And look at all the detailing on that dress gone to waste!
But it wouldn’t be the first time one of the ladies on the show put on a wedding dress only for the nuptials to fall through. No pun intended. Hilary looked pretty amazing in her gown as Trevor fell to his death while trying to propose to her.
Gina Waters on Martin
This wedding was everything. Loved that it was on the beach and that Babyface sang “You Are So Beautiful” as Gina walked out in this flowing gown.
Synclaire James on Living Single
Synclaire, always known for her kooky personality and style, was actually a lace dream during her wedding to Overton.
Teri Joseph on Soul Food
After ending their engagement and dating around for a while, Teri and Damon finally reunited to tie the knot. Nicole Ari Parker’s character wore this very simple and elegant white gown with barely there straps.
Toni Childs on Girlfriends
Toni and Todd may not have lasted, but their wedding was beautiful. Toni wore this strapless white number with a floral veil and looked stunning — as usual.
Chardonnay Pitts on The Game
Okay, so Chardonnay and Jason’s wedding/vow renewal went to hell in a handbasket after he professed his love for ex-wife Kelly during his vows. Still, Chardonnay’s dress was a stunner. Check out the back detail as she storms out of the church:
Christina Hawthore on HawthoRNe
A very pregnant Christina married Tom in a laid back look for a laid back outdoor wedding. She opted for a short dress with a beaded empire waist. While the brown shoes paired with the look were a no for me, she still looked very pretty.
Louise Jefferson on The Jeffersons
To renew her vows with George, Weezy passed on white and wore something blue. And we kind of love it. Why not mix it up the second time around?
