Kat Von D Is Going Vegan

Kat Von D’s self-titled makeup line is amazing. (No, seriously. I live by her proven full coverage offerings when it comes to concealer and foundations). And it’s also going vegan!

In a recent interview with vegan lifestyle magazine Laika, the tattoo artist, model, and entrepreneur shared that she’s taking Kat Von D Beauty 100 percent vegan after she herself became a vegan. “It wasn’t until last year that I was like, ‘What the f*** am I waiting for?’ I have a platform and this, to me, is the number one most important issue on this planet,” she said.

“We have been reformulating anything that had carmine in the past, and if we can’t reformulate, we just throw them out,” she continued. “I can live without a purple eye shadow, it’s fine.”

So just like those that don’t eat anything that’s an animal byproduct — meat, dairy, honey, etc. — the beauty line will now eliminate the use of common ingredients like beeswax, which is used in most lip balms, and Carmine, a dye made from beetles’ wings.

“When I launched [the line,] I was not sober; I was not vegan yet. So I had no idea about ingredients in formulation,” Von D continued. “I would always think it was funny when brands would be like, ‘Oh, we’re vegan.’ Yeah, well, you don’t eat lipstick. [I was] super ignorant, you know?”

Environmentally friendly and health conscious, makeup that use plant-based and mineral-based ingredients are full of beneficial properties that can heal, soothe and be gentle on the skin. For centuries, plants have been used to heal ailments and skin issues, ranging from tea tree to cleanse, chamomile to soothe and calm, and olive oil to moisturize. Plus, minerals have been used time and time again to treat skin conditions and even protect you from sunburn.

There’s no word on what the reformulated goods will consist of, but knowing Kat D, her products will still consist of top notch quality.
