When you’re on your first few dates with someone, it’s normal that you both want a drink or two to loosen up. Even if you don’t need alcohol to relax around a total stranger with whom you’re hoping to fall in love (pressure, much?), alcohol is still a big part of a lot of dates. Your restaurant probably has a special on sangria pitchers or some fun whiskey flight paired with a cheese board. You also want to see the best in your date, because your friends say you’re too critical. For these reasons, it can be hard to spot a man with a drinking problem within the first few dates. But you want to walk away from a relationship with an alcoholic before you’re too invested because any sort of addict cannot fully emotionally support another human being until he’s kicked his own problem. Here are 20 early warning signs that your date is an alcoholic.

He won’t go somewhere without alcohol

Before going to any restaurant, he calls to ask if they have alcohol. If they don’t have it, he’s really intent on finding a place that does even if you really wanted to go to that restaurant.

He has a lot of lost memories

A lot of his stories end in, “Then I don’t remember what happened. We got so drunk.” In fact, most of his stories end that way, and sometimes he forgets pretty important details.

He’s completely different after one drink

His personality after a drink is night and day. When he’s sober, he’s reserved and has self-control, but when he has just one drink he becomes more reckless.

He is anxious until he’s had a drink

He cannot focus on the conversation until he has a drink in his hand. When his first drink gets near empty, he becomes anxious again until he can order a second one.

He steers all dates to bars

He wants to turn most dates into party nights. When you’re at dinner, he’s receiving texts from his friends who are drinking down the street and convinces you to go there.

He calls and apologizes after each date

After each date, he calls and apologizes for the way he behaved. It’s almost as if you were on a date with one guy, and a different guy (the sober version) has to clean up the first guy’s mess.

He loses his phone a lot

People who constantly get blackout drunk lose or break their phones constantly. If your date regularly takes days to respond to a text because he lost his phone yet again, he may have a drinking problem.
