Chapped lips don’t always sound like a big deal, but they can really get in the way of your beauty routine. And they don’t just get in the way of lipstick application. Lips that always seem to be chapped can be painful and unsightly. Luckily, there are ways to deal with persistent dryness that go further than putting on a little ChapStick.
The key is finding out why your lips are dry in the first place. And misplacing your lip gloss isn’t the only reason. From what you eat to how you sleep, lots of factors can be affecting your lips. Figure out the root of the problem and you can stop dry lips before they start (and heal them quickly when they start to chap).
So don’t throw out your favorite matte lipstick just yet. There are lots of ways to heal and smooth out your lips from the inside out.
Put Lip Gloss on Before You Wash Your Face
Your face wash could be drying out your lips.
Slice Some Cucumber
And press the slices against your lips to soothe them when they’re chapped and sore. For extra soothing effects, chill them first.
Try Not to Lick Your Lips
The acid in your saliva only makes dry, chapped lips worse.
Breathe Through Your Nose
Air flow dries your lips out. If you’re on the verge of chapped lips and you can’t find your gloss, avoid breathing through your mouth when you can.
Don’t Peel Chapped Lips
Instead, soften them with a lip balm rich in shea butter or almond oil. Bring moisture back to your lips and they’ll exfoliate naturally.
Use Beeswax to Seal Moisture in
When your lips are plump and moisturized, finish them with a beeswax balm before you head out. It will protect them from the drying air.
Use Sunscreen
If your lips get more chapped during summer months, try a lip balm or lipstick with SPF. Your lips could be sunburned. But wait until they’re done peeling to put it on or you could irritate your lips.
Condition First
If your favorite shade of lipstick dries your lips out, apply a lip conditioner before you put it on. It will seal moisture in.
Try Vaseline
Lip balm from the beauty counter is cute, but nothing beats Vaseline for sealing and healing power. If you’re having a bad lip day, switch to Vaseline until your lips feel better.
Skip the Hot Sauce
If your lips are already struggling, spicy foods will dry them out more.
See Your Dermatologist
If your lips are always chapped and nothing seems to work, you could be allergic to something you’re using in your beauty routine. A quick visit to a dermatologist can get to the root of the problem.
Drink Water
When you’re not drinking enough, dry lips and skin can be one of the first signs of dehydration.
