If you aren’t the type of girlfriend to go through a man’s phone or to hack into his email, or secretly follow him around, or interrogate his friends, or pay his assistant for information…you get the idea…well, that’s a good thing. It means you respect somebody’s privacy, and you trust in the universe to show you the truth, whether or not you go hunting it down. But, it can also mean that the truth makes it to you a little bit later than most. Just because you don’t want to be paranoid, doesn’t mean that you can’t be observant. There are things a man does right in front of you that show you he is lying, and you don’t need to guess a password or pay off a bartender to see them. Here are 15 signs he is lying to your face.

He pauses before answering

When somebody knows the answer to something and plans on telling you the honest answer, they don’t need to pause before giving it to you. Pauses are for making up answers.

He scratches his face

Liars will subconsciously scratch their face or rub their eyes to distract you from the dishonest expressions they are making.

He pretends to stare into the distance

When retelling a story, he looks off into the distance as if he is lost in thought, caught up in the emotion or trying to remember it. But when people are telling you a true story, they look at you.

He “forgot” something unforgettable

He “forgot” where he was last week, or what that one female coworker’s name is, or which hotel he stayed at in Las Vegas. People don’t forget those things unless it is convenient to forget them.

He laughs for no reason

When you ask him a question, he lets out a sarcastic scoff and rolls his eyes before answering. He’s trying to play it off as if your question is stupid, but really, he is stalling while he comes up with a lie.

He won’t look you in the eyes

This is a huge sign that somebody is lying. Some people lie, but they still don’t have the heart to watch the reaction of the person to whom they are lying.

He looks you in the eyes too much

Other liars are so determined to make you believe their lie that they power through the temptation to look away from you. Instead, they force you to look them in the eyes in an intimidating way.

He shrugs a lot

Shrugging is almost always a sign of a lie. Shrugging is the body’s way of admitting, “I’m not telling the truth” when the mouth is telling a lie.

A warm nose

Have you ever noticed that when you lie or even say something you feel bad about your face gets warm? Your nose in particular tends to heat up.

Closing up his body

If he is crossing his legs, holding something tightly in his arms, or wrapping his arms or legs around something, it’s a giveaway that he is holding information in.

They do a lot of hedging

“You won’t believe this but…” “I know you’re going to think this is a lie but…” “You have to believe me when I say…” When somebody knows they aren’t lying, they don’t feel the need to hedge.

He sounds worried when you call his name

If you just call his name from across the apartment in an accusatory way–like when you find he left his dishes out–he gets very worried. He rushes in the room asking, “What is it?” as if you found a dead body. He thinks you discovered his lie.

He gets scared when you say, “Oh my god!”

If you just see a spider in the house and yell, “Oh my god!” he comes rushing in again. He thinks you discovered his lie.

He does something different with his hands

If he is usually somebody who puts his hands in his pockets but is suddenly flailing them around, he is probably lying. If he is somebody who usually uses his hands a lot when he speaks but is suddenly shoving them in his pockets, he is probably lying.
