If you’re going to throw shade, you want it to be epic, especially if you’re throwing shade on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other forms of highly visible social media. Shade is the not so secret key ingredient to countless diss tracks, Twitter beefs, and celebrity feuds. There’s no magic formula, but the right amount of shade can also translate to countless views, likes, retweets, follows and overall activity all up in your mentions (not to mention, news stories on all of the entertainment shows).
No one is safe from the shade. I repeat. No one is safe from the shade. Case in point: TV networks are even getting in on the action. Whether they’re dissing other channels or fellow competitors, awards show performances or rehashing old celebrity beef, numerous popular TV networks have proven that they’re perfectly capable of stirring the pot with epic shade and disses. Sometimes the disses work, other times, they backfire. Here are some prime examples of shade thrown from the most unexpected of places–your favorite networks.
BET vs. Madonna
Mere minutes after Madonna’s show-closing tribute to the late Prince during the Billboard Music Awards, the network teased their upcoming BET Awards Prince tribute and released the following statement via Twitter: “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We Got You.” BET’s tweet has since been deleted.
MTV vs. Ciara
Referencing years-old beef, the “newbee” tweeting on behalf of MTV during the Billboard Music Awards joked that as she did with Future, Ciara probably wouldn’t dare to say Rihanna’s name. Ciara, who thought Rihanna’s performance was one of the best of the night, clapped back, asking MTV why they felt the need to go there. MTV has since deleted the tweet.

The Real vs. Tamar Braxton
This isn’t a network throwing shade this time around, but rather, a TV show. Producers of The Real released a statement saying that Braxton’s recent departure was a mutual decision. But in a video, her former co-host, Loni Love, did say she was let go. And on Instagram, Braxton posted that she was stabbed in the back by someone she trusted. Who’s telling the truth?
BET vs. Stacey Dash
What happens when you suggest BET should not be in existence? Just ask Stacey Dash. During an interview with Fox & Friends, the actress, who appeared in several episodes of The Game voiced an unpopular opinion, claiming that the network promotes racial segregation. Um, sure.
ABC vs. Kelly Ripa
I don’t see this so much as a diss (more like poor communication), but Kelly Ripa sure did. The co-host of Live! With Kelly and Michael was reportedly blindsided by Michael Strahan’s pending move to Good Morning America. Ripa reacted by not showing up to work for several days.
MTV vs. The Oscars
It was subtle, but at this year’s MTV Movie Awards, co-hosts Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (along with some of the night’s winners, for that matter) commented on several occasions that MTV gives awards to movies that people have actually heard of and seen.
BET and Blue Ivy
BET publicly apologized to The Carters, a.k.a., Beyoncé and Jay Z, as well as Karrueche Tran after she read a staff-written teleprompter “joke” about Blue Ivy’s hair during an episode of 106 & Park. “I really did wake up like this, because my parents never comb my hair,” said Tran. Needless to say, people were not laughing. Stephen Hill took to Twitter to make amends.
Fox News vs. LL Cool J
LL Cool J didn’t approve of his name and likeness being used by Fox News for a Sarah Palin-backed show called Real American Stories without his permission. Why would he? After expressing his discontent on Twitter, the network removed LL from the promos, but not without issuing a statement: “…it appears that [LL Cool J] does not want to be associated with a program that could serve as an inspiration to others, we are cutting his interview from the special and wish him the best with his fledgling acting career.” Fox News, as always, played themselves.
The Walking Dead vs. Game of Thrones
You don’t have to watch Game of Thrones to know that the show’s fans go hard for all things GOT. AMC show The Walking Dead made fun of the HBO hit on Twitter for putting their fans through so much. Was this shade or a little friendly competition?

E! vs. Michael J. Fox
During the Golden Globes red carpet ceremony two years ago, the E! network published a pop-up “fun fact” about actor Michael J. Fox. The fact read: “Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991.” E! apologized for the unintentional insensitivity regarding Fox’s illness.
