beyonce

With each effort, Beyoncé, the Queen of Slay and Innovation, continues to break the mold.  Her concept album Lemonade proves that with each song and its accompanying visuals, which something tells me we’ll be studying and unpacking for quite some time.  Lemonade also happens to be the singer’s most personal album to date.  Beyoncé opens up about infidelity in her marriage, sings about “Becky with the good hair” and promises her husband “You’re gonna lose your wife,” if he tries “this sh-t again.”  Thanks to Lemonade and the real life “Becky” who allegedly outed herself via social media, legions of Beyoncé fans turned against Racheal Ray with a quickness, accusing her of being “Becky.”  Oops! I mean Rachel Roy…

Among many things, all of this lemonade got us thinking about songs that speak to love, heartbreak, and cheating. Whether singers have been cheated on or did the cheating themselves, the issue is a common one in all kinds of music.  Here are some of the best-known songs that deal with infidelity.

Usher

Confessions.  You know the album, the song, and the lyrics.  “If I’m gonna tell it, then I gotta tell it all…”  But who is it all about?  Fans assumed Usher was singing about his relationship with former girlfriend Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, but producer Jermaine Dupri said he wrote the song, which mirrored his own life, to “create a ruckus.”

VH1 star K. Michelle admits she may have a sex tape floating around starring her and two women. One of the participants has been threatening to leak it.

The lyrics in K Michelle’s “I’m ‘Bout To Cheat” say it all: “How about I cheat on you?  Can’t you see what you’re making me do?  Just to show you what you put me through.” See what cheating can make you do?

Trey Songz

In his song “Last Time,” Trey Songz swears he won’t cheat again.  Mm-hmm.   He also says his woman deserves a better man in the aptly-titled song “Infidelity.”  Kind of makes you wonder whether either of these songs are personal for the singer.

John Legend

John Legend, a cheater?  Say it ain’t so!  It ain’t, so don’t fret.  The singer’s “She Don’t Have To Know” came out roughly two years before he met his wife, Chrissy Teigen.  Sometimes a song is just a song.

Monica

Rumors have been circulating that Monica’s husband, Shannon Brown, is allegedly cheating.  But the singer clapped back at commenters via Instagram, much like she did in her song “Sideline Ho” from her album The Makings of Me.

Rihanna

Is Rihanna’s song “Unfaithful” based on truth?  In part.  But not her truth, anyway.  The song was penned by Ne-Yo, who in a 2011 interview said he was guilty of cheating in a relationship and, at the time, had trouble committing.

Keyshia Cole rehashes husband's infidelity, accuses him of bringing random women in their home and having relations in their bed. What a mess!

Keyshia Cole

Keyshia Cole has been very forthright about her husband’s infidelity on social media and in her song “N.L.U.” Cole sings about being with a man who makes it hard to love and trust.  Was this song inspired by Daniel?

Shaggy

Surely Shaggy’s hit song “It Wasn’t Me” tops everyone’s cheating song list.  The song, however, was not based on real-life events.  In an interview with Marc Lamont Hill, Shaggy said he was inspired to write it after watching Raw, Eddie Murphy’s famous stand-up comedy special.  Who knew?
