We all loved Beyoncé’s “Lemonade.” But what we didn’t love, or expect, was an Instagram post from designer Rachel Roy that looked like this:
Strong attacks from the BeyHive followed, including attacks on Roy’s teenage daughter, Ava, which came about after the designer made her IG private. But aside from crowning her “Becky with the good hair,” based on the Lemonade track “Sorry,” and knowing about her clothing, what do we really know about Rachel Roy? Probably not a lot. So here are 10 interesting things:
Rachel Roy Is Not Rachael Ray
I’m sure you heard that quite a few very confused BeyHive members swarmed the page of chef Rachael Ray, accusing her of being “Becky with the good hair,” and pretty much attacking her character. Despite many people commenting on the fact that they were coming after the wrong Rachel, people have continued to leave crazy remarks on the chef’s page as recently as five hours ago. One woman even said, “I’m perfectly aware of that fact but this chick had it comin for a million other reasons anyway.”
Rachel Roy Was Raised Seventh-Day Adventist
Roy was not only raised Seventh-Day Adventist, but she also went to a Seventh-Day Adventist elementary school. Her father was particularly strict, as she recalled in an Elle profile from 2009, but said it made her a better person:
“I’m thankful I grew up the way I did,” she says. “It made me a hard worker and insightful to other people’s lives.”
Rachel Roy Is Dutch And Indian
Roy was born to a Dutch mother and a Bengali Indian father. In an interview with RedFlag.org, she gave an inside peek into what life was like growing up with both, specifically, the greatest lesson she learned from them:
“My mom is a white Dutch woman that converted – she tried to be everything that a good Indian woman should be. In her doing so what I learned was kindness, respect for your elders and respect for people’s privacy…My dad was extremely demanding. He worked three jobs his entire life – he still works three jobs. When he was a sociology professor at a college he would make my brother and I sit in the back row and take notes on what we learned. If I didn’t have that experience I don’t believe I would have had the successes I have had in all my work and in my business. It allowed me to apply what I learned about sociology – essentially the psychology of people – to my work.”

Rachel Roy Is Good Friends With Kim Kardashian
This could possibly be another reason Beyoncé and Jay Z didn’t attend Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding. Not only were they trying to work on their issues, but Roy was present at the ceremony in Italy in 2014. She was at all the festivities leading up the wedding, and Roy has dressed Kardashian on occasion, so they are pretty close.
Rachel Roy Was Friends With Solange Knowles
Before sh-t went down in an elevator after a 2014 Met Ball Gala after-party, Solo and Roy actually attended the 2012 Met Ball Gala together, with the youngest Knowles sister wearing an exquisite yellow peplum gown by the designer. It was all good a few years ago…
Rachel Roy Got One Of Her First Big Breaks At Rocawear
Roy started her career as an intern at Rocawear. In an interview with Time, she said that based on what she learned during her interning years at the company, this is the advice she would share with other hopeful designers: “Definitely intern, because learning what you don’t like is really, really vital, and knowing eventually what you do like.” Roy met ex-husband, Damon Dash, who gave her that big break, and became creative director of the women and children’s divisions of Rocawear before starting her own line, which Dash reportedly helped finance.
Rachel Roy Has Dressed A Slew Of A-Listers
We already told you about Kim K, but she’s also dressed First Lady Michelle Obama, Iman, Tyra Banks, Diane Sawyer, Kate Hudson and many, many more women. When speaking on dressing our First Lady, Roy said to the Monterey County Weekly, “She has been extremely supportive of my collection,” Roy says. “I love seeing my designs become a part of her everyday life and style.” But Mrs. Obama IS pretty tight with Bey, so that could change…

Rachel Roy’s Relationship With Dash Is All Bad Now
Despite marrying in 2004 and having two adorable kids together, Roy and Dash divorced in 2009, and their relationship since has not been a good one. Not only did he publicly trash her on social media around the time of their custody battle (which Roy won, walking away with sole physical custody of daughters Ava and Tallulah), Roy and her two children were recently granted restraining orders against Dash for a period of three years.
If Rachel Roy Did Mess With Jay Z, It’s A New Thing
Arthur Alson, who was a videographer for Roc-A-Fella back in the day told our sister site, StyleBlazer, that Jay and Roy had a strictly professional relationship during those days. When asked if he saw anything inappropriate between the two, Alston had this to say:
“Never. I don’t believe that [the rumors] to be true. This is the first time I’m hearing it. I know that Rachel has been with Dame for a long time. She was even pregnant when Aaliyah was his girl. So she’s been around for a while.”
He continued, “So Rachel was in a position where –she started off as an intern– Dame was attracted to her and started assisting him. She got to be hands-on with the lines because being that she was dating him; he brought her into his business structure. She learned a lot about the business and Dame taught her as well.”
Rachel Roy Has A Habit Of Posting Controversial Things
In case you thought the whole “Good hair don’t care” post was messy, it’s not the only time Roy’s social media habits got her in trouble with the BeyHive. After rumors swirled about her possible involvement in that controversial elevator skirmish between Jay and Solange (where Beyoncé did very little to stop her sister’s haymakers from falling), Roy posted another “unbothered” type of post on social media soon after. But she used what people claimed were Jay Z lyrics, specifically from his track “Beach Is Better” off of Magna Carta Holy Grail and the Hive broke loose:
