Kwame Kilpatrick Indicted on 19 Charges
A federal grand jury has indicted former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on 19 fraud-related charges.
Detroit News reports:
Kilpatrick was indicted on 10 counts of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud, five counts of filing false tax returns and one count of tax evasion, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Kilpatrick is to be arraigned on the charges July 13. The most serious charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
“I think maybe the Kwame Kilpatrick saga is over,” said Michael Stefani, the attorney who released text messages that led to a myriad of legal problems for the former mayor. “These are clearly much more serious than anything he has faced so far.”
