Some days you order water instead of soda, have a healthy salad and hit the gym at night. Other days, things don’t go quite so well: You’ve hit the vending machine three or four times before lunch, and you’re already thinking about your next snack.
Sometimes it’s hormonal, emotional, stress related or some bad day combination of all three. But while all-day snacking happens to everyone, there are ways to keep binge eating from dialing your diet progress back.
The trick? Always keep some of these foods around. Stash them in your purse, in the refrigerator at work (with your name written clearly on it), or on the kitchen counter where they’re easy to grab.
Snack on these before you go HAM at the corner store that stocks your favorite salt and vinegar chips. With these options, you can snack away without feeling bad — or even stop your all-day snacking in its tracks.
Granny Smith Apples
Granny Smith apples are great for snacking. They’re less than 100 calories per fruit (a little more than 100 for a large apple) and full of fiber that suppresses your appetite.
So feel free to snack away.
Air-Popped Popcorn
When your cravings say “carbs, carbs, carbs,” you can munch out on air-popped popcorn. Bags of air-popped popcorn usually have less than 50 calories a cup.
Almonds
Throw one ounce (about 22 almonds) into a snack bag and toss them into your purse. With around 160 calories, they’ll fill you up without dinging your diet too much.
And thanks to all of their fiber and healthy fat, they’ll apply the breaks on your desire to snack for the rest of the day.
Pickles
When you’re craving something salty, try pickles instead of chips. They’re delicious with plenty of crunch. And because they have almost no calories, you can chow down on them all day without going up a pant size.
Dark Chocolate
Every girl should carry around a bar of dark chocolate for that time of the month when her cravings only want one thing.
Dark chocolate is low in calories, boosts your mood and will keep you from monopolizing all of the milk chocolate in the snack basket at work.
Lemons
Add wedges to your water and drink a tall glass before you eat anything. The pectin in the fruit will not only refresh you but suppress your appetite so you’ll eat less of your next snack.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Keep a little jar around and add it to your salad or sprinkle it on your chips if you’re already bought a pack.
Studies have shown that having apple cider vinegar with meals not only fills you up but makes you eat up to 300 fewer calories during the rest of the day.
Hot Sauce
There’s a good reason to keep a little bottle in your purse. Sprinkle it on all of your savory snacks. The heat will help your body burn fat better, and the kick will keep you from overindulging.
Grapefruit
People who ate half of a grapefruit before every meal ate so much less afterward that they lost an average of four pounds over 12 weeks.
Cook With Coconut Oil
If cravings hit when you’re at home, focus on home-cooked meals and use coconut oil. Unlike other cooking oils, it’s especially filling, and you’ll eat less of your meal and burn the calories better.
It fills you up better than other oils and keeps you fuller longer.
