You want a partner who is ambitious, responsible, and passionate about what he does. If he can pay his bills and then some, that doesn’t hurt. But there is a fine line between a hard worker and a workaholic. Workaholics forget that working should just be a means to the end and not the end. They forget that we work so that we can create a platform from which to enjoy what really matters, like relationships. And when a man forgets that, he will put his relationships on the back burner–his partner won’t feel like a priority. Save yourself the trouble of dating a man who can’t make you a priority and learn to recognize these early warning signs of a workaholic.

Trying to plan trips

When you so much as mention that it would be nice to go on a vacation, your boyfriend goes into stress mode, blurting out reasons the trip won’t work.

When you go on trips

If you are so lucky as to get your guy to go on a trip, he brings his phone to massages, to the pool, to dinner and anywhere it’s allowed. And he takes every call.

He is money obsessed

When people talk about their aspirations, he immediately asks how much that type of work pays. It doesn’t occur to them that they do it just for the thrill of it.

He cannot leave Wi-Fi

He will not go somewhere where there isn’t wifi. He calls venues before going to them to check what the wifi set up is.

He turns small talk into work talk

He finds a way to turn even the lightest, silliest conversations at parties into work talk.

He networks at inappropriate times

He tries to network with everybody, everywhere. He finds networking opportunities at funerals.

He gets nervous when he leaves the office

The moment you take him out of the office he starts tapping his foot a lot, checking his watch constantly, and carrying out lots of nervous habits.

All his friends are from work

He doesn’t have one friend who he doesn’t know through work.

He never initiates social plans

If he has social plans, they were never his idea. He could never take his mind off work enough to organize a night at a concert with a group of friends. He can only be dragged against his will.

He only has suits

When you tell him to wear something casual to a luau, he doesn’t have it. All of his shirts button up and all of his pants have creases.

He sleeps with his phone on

His phone wakes you up all of the time, with random texts from his friends. You ask him to put it on silent but he refuses to for fear of missing a work call.

He goes MIA during work

He never sends so much as one text during work hours. It’s as if he forgets the rest of the world exists during work.

He tells you to befriend your coworkers

He has tried to tell you to befriend your coworkers. You said you have enough friends and he said, “But it could be good for your career.”

He tries to manage your career

He cannot simply listen to you vent about work. He immediately goes into fix it mode, and has gone so far as to tell you how to do your job or advance in your career.
