Some of your grandmother’s beauty tips probably won’t fly today, like wearing girdles and eating tapeworm eggs to lose weight—ouch! And gross! But keep in mind that your grandmother comes from a time when there weren’t hair straighteners and tattooed eyeliner. She comes from a time when beauty tips had to be basic, straight forward, and as simple as possible because there just wasn’t the technology for much else.

Today, when you can hire a plastic surgeon through an app to put injections in your face, don’t you sort of crave for simpler ages of beauty? And, if you look back at photos of women from 50 years ago, they were pretty damned glamorous—and they didn’t need to have side boob to do it. Here are “old lady” beauty tips that are worth trying.

Rollers in your hair

Don’t wear them as tight as your nana did (unless you’re going for the Cotton Club bob look) but try some loose rollers. Lightly dab some oil on dry hair and snap these babies in a couple of hours before leaving the house — just roll up the rollers about half way. You’ll get that awesome soft wave look and you didn’t have to try hard for it at all.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation seems to have fallen off the map since so many face washes now claim to be “Exfoliating.” But there is nothing quite like taking a gentle exfoliator directly to the face a few times a week—it removes stubborn dead skin cells, allowing your brighter, younger looking skin to come through.

Cucumbers on your eyes

Cucumbers on the eyes were the signature image attached to beauty articles from the 70s, but now we mostly just take cucumbers in our water on a spa day. Cucumbers, however, are filled with water and placing them directly on your eyes will transfer that hydration to the skin under your eyes, removing puffiness. Plus it makes for a cute selfie.

Pointy bras

They’ll take a moment to get used to, but those pointy bras a la 1960 can make you feel ultra-feminine. Even women with small breasts look like they’re carrying torpedos on their chest in these structured braziers. They can be fun to wear with a flowy blouse and fitted pencil skirt.

Red lipstick

Even if you don’t have time to put on any other makeup, put on some red lipstick. It instantly makes you look glamorous, distinguished and put together. Forget the unnatural purples and neon pinks women are wearing today—red is carnal and seductive.

Fake lashes, solo

Plenty of women wear fake lashes today, but they pair them with thick eyeliner and eyeshadow, which makes their eyes look overdone. Wear fake lashes and just fake lashes on your eyes; your eyes will look gorgeous, without looking heavily done.

A good updo

There was a time when walking the red carpet with one’s hair down was practically a sin! It was considered too casual. But more importantly, nothing highlights your neckline, the beautiful earrings and necklace you’re wearing, and your cheekbones, like a nice updo.

Nylons

Today most women either go bare-legged in a dress or wear completely solid tights, but nylons should make a comeback. Nylons suck everything in while still making your legs appear nude. Plus, they can save you if you didn’t have time to shave your legs.

Relocate the waist

Low-rise pants and skirts don’t do anybody any favors. Mostly teenage girls who haven’t gotten their hips yet can wear them. The rest of us only try, begrudgingly. But they cut off the natural, beautiful curves of a woman’s figure! Embrace bottoms with a waist that falls on, well, your waist! They will always be slimming, and make your breasts look bigger. Who doesn’t want that?
