Katie Holmes

Would you become a Scientologist for love?

Katie Holmes didn’t officially convert from Catholicism, but she did start practicing Scientology a few months after she started dating Tom Cruise in 2005. And her daughter Suri Cruise was baptized in the church.

But in 2012, she went above and beyond to get away from Tom and the Church of Scientology. She also registered as a parishioner in a New York Catholic church during her high-profile divorce.

Romantic love isn’t the only thing that drives celebrities convert. Legendary singer Gladys Knight converted to the Mormon faith because of the influence of her children.

Knight once said, “My son Jimmy and his wife were the first to join the Church, after his best friend shared his testimony. Then my daughter, Kenya, joined the Church. I watched their lives grow, and to see how my grandchildren were being raised and what they knew really impressed me.”

She joined the Church in 1997 and was baptized by her son Jimmy. Years later, her husband, William McDowell, converted to the faith shortly after they were married.
