Growing up, I never paid much attention to my parents’ or grandparents’ housekeeping techniques. But now that I’m a bit older, I sure wish that I had. Thankfully, my grandmother is still just a call away, and she’s a treasure trove for house hacks. Take last month for example, I noticed that some cooking grease had fallen on the floor between the stove and the refrigerator. It had begun to cake up, and no matter how hard I scrubbed and mopped the area, the grease would not come up. I eventually broke down and called my granny to see if she had any tricks.

“Easy Off,” she said without missing a beat.

Sure enough, I sprayed some Easy Off on the grease and let it sit. I came back 15 to 20 minutes later and went over the spot with a mop and drenched in warm soapy water. Within seconds, the grease was gone. Dirty, oily curling irons can do more harm than good to your hair. To keep your heated hair appliances in tip-top shape, occasionally spray the iron down with a thin layer of Easy Off. Allow the substance to sit for five minutes, and then wipe it off with a damp rag.

Remove burn marks from clothing irons

To remove burn marks from your clothing iron, How to Clean Stuff suggests covering every part of the cooled iron—except for the soleplate—with paper. Spray the soleplate with a thin layer of Easy Off and allow it to sit for three minutes. Wipe down the soleplate with cool water and a damp rag.

According to Reader’s Digest, Easy Off is a wonderful remedy for cast-iron pots and pans with caked up grease. The site recommends spraying down the pot or pan with Easy Off and placing it in a sealed plastic bag overnight. The following day, you should remove the pot from the bag and gently scrub it with a stiff wire brush. Then, proceed to wash the pot thoroughly with soap and water. Rinse it well and then pat it dry with paper towels.
