The “experts” are always encouraging online daters to spice up their profiles if they’re unsatisfied with the amount of action their inboxes are seeing. However, according to a recent study conducted by the Hinge dating app, lame opening lines might actually be the cause of one’s uneventful online dating life.

To test this theory, the Hinge copywriting team compiled a list of more than 100 opening lines that they considered to be cool and creative and randomly sent them out to 22% of Hinge members. The company’s engineers measured response rates to each message to determine which openers worked best and after 8 million views, they began to notice a trend.

According to the survey, men are 98% more likely to respond to private messages with assertive openers. Suggested openers when approaching men on dating apps include “Free this week?” and “Drinks soon?” Women, however, are 40% more likely to respond to openers about food. Other suggestions for starting the conversation include:

“Two truths and a lie; ready, set, go!”

“Sunday priorities: exercise, sleep, or aggressive mimosas?”

“Best discovery: Netflix or avocados?”

Oh, and FYI: “Hey, what’s up?” was proven to be the least popular.

And of course, age plays a role in the types of one-liners singles are likely to respond to. Those in the 24-28 age group are more inclined to respond to lifestyle-related openers while those 35 and up are more swayed by pop culture references.

The study also revealed that timing is crucial, especially when messaging men. If a woman doesn’t message a guy within six hours of becoming his confirmed match, the likelihood of him responding to her drops by 25%.
