Robert Downey, Jr. may play a superhero on the silver screen but he needed some saving himself after he put his foot in his mouth earlier this year. The Iron Man star was trying to take a jab at Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for calling superhero movies “cultural genocide.” “For a man whose native tongue is Spanish, to be able to put together a phrase like ‘cultural genocide’ just speaks to how bright he is,” Downey said during an interview with “The Guardian.” A backlash on twitter ensued with many calling Downey insensitive and racist.
