Oh The Drama: 15 Rappers With Autobiographies

In Common’s book titled  One Day It’ll All Make Sense he revealed how his father kidnapped him and his mother and held them at gunpoint as they drove cross country. She drugged him with pills to escape. His father was trying to reunite with her. Umm sir, you may want to rethink that.

Bad Boy Artist Ma$e co-authored with Karen Hunter his autobiography titled: REVELATIONS: THERE’S A LIGHT AFTER THE LIME  where he recalls what drove him to leave hip-hop in 1999 at the height of his career. But here’s the kicker in the book Karen Hunter questions his move back into hip-hop and what that meant for him:

“There was a moment in the book where he says, ‘If I ever go back to rap, then you will know that I have fallen,’ ” says co-author Karen Hunter. “I remember questioning him about that: ‘Are you sure you want to put this in the book?’ And he was sure. Then, several years later, he went back.”

If you thought Eminem’s blond hair was natural…think again. In his book The Way I Am he reveals that his blond hair was a result of an ecstasy bender and when he showed it to Dr. Dre he told him to keep it as it was a good look for his image.

What kind of drugs did he take???

Remember Miami rapper Trick Daddy? Well this lovely fella says that he mistakenly caused his childhood girlfriend to get raped. In Magic City: Trials Of A Native Son he recalls his girlfriend Tiffany (the one girl he didn’t share sexually with his friends) he’d taken her to a crack house to have sex, but left her to go and get condoms, when he returned the drug dealers in the house had raped her. She’s never spoken to him again.

The RZA of Wu-Tang wrote the THE WU-TANG MANUAL; A comprehensive introduction to his group’s world with his first book, The Wu-Tang Manual (Penguin Group). The curriculum is broken up into four “Books,” each having nine sections, or “Chambers.” Book One familiarizes the reader with all of the Wu members, Book Two explains in detail the Clan’s varying influences (martial arts, Five Percenter ideology, mafia culture, comic books, chess, etc.), Book Three breaks down several of the group’s biggest songs, and Book Four ventures into the signature musicality of the WTC.

Pepa (of Salt-N-Pepa) Admits To Almost Being Gang-Raped in  Let’s Talk About Pep. Basically she and a friend went to a local projects in Queens to receive money that someone owed the friend. When they got there the spot quickly started to fill with guys and they made a quick run for it but the guys still chased them down the stairs. Later she found out that they had indeed been planning to tie them up and gang-rape them.

But not all rap memoirs are juicy. Snoop’s book The Doggfather strings the reader along for 240 pages before admitting that he’s not going to give up any juicy details about the nitty-gritty inner workings of Death Row. Booooo! WENN

I MAKE MY OWN RULES was LL Cool J’s brutally honest rap memoir where he spoke about experimenting with cocaine and other drugs to being addicted to sex—at one point detailing sleeping with a pregnant groupie on a bathroom sink during the Panther tour in 1985, and shamelessly cutting off his kids and future wife for another woman in 1992. If this isn’t enough of a page turner he also talks about his father shot his mother and grandfather with a 12-gauge shotgun and his grandmother single handedly hauled them into the car and drove both of them to the hospital where they did survive.

Russell Simmons’   Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, + God was certainly a page turner full of knowledge and juicy details like the time he revealed how he was a suspect in a murder case. Basically he used to hook up with a girl who sold drugs, she got killed and he was a top suspect.

In 50 Cent’s From Pieces To Weight he not only discusses the fact that his mom was bisexual but he also talks about how she made him up the neighborhood bully when he was just 5 years old.

Faith Evans doesn’t hold back in her book Keep The Faith where she reveals that even when she was married to Big she caught him in bed with Lil Kim. (Sorry we aren’t shocked by this much.)

E.A.R.L.: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF DMX is a gripping tale of the man, the music and his demons. He opens up about  violence, imprisonment, familial neglect and building his family during his formative years.

Hip-Hop pioneer and legend Grandmaster Flash  recalls in his memoir The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats smoking coke for ‘Breakfast, Lunch, And Dinner’. Whoa!

Prodigy in My Infamous Life he details the murder trial for Havoc’s brother, Killer Black which revealed how rapper Capone of Capone-N-Noreaga testified and lied on Killer Black in order to get less jail time. Though he claims he lied to help Killer Black beat the case as he knew what he said was a lie. So much drama!

Put on Your Crown: Life-Changing Moments on the Path to Queendom was such an inspiration book written by Queen Latifah aka Dana Owens. Modeled after Maria Shriver’s Just Who Will You Be, Queen Latifah’s goal with Put On Your Crown is to help young women build a strong sense of self-esteem.  We just think this is awesome!
