As parents, we all want what’s best for our children. Unfortunately, for some of us, we’ve not only had to cope with the struggles of a dissolved marriage or relationship but we’ve also had to guide the children through the tumult with as little trouble as possible. The first priority is making sure the kids are okay and at peace with the split before we remotely consider our own needs and wants. As the wounds heal over time, the children generally just want to see Mom and Dad happy.

Which brings us to the discussion at hand – dating with children. The idea of a blended family is quite overwhelming for some and, in some cases, may discourage some single parents from dating. But when the time is right and a single parent is ready to move on and seriously consider sharing their life with a special someone, that “special someone” should be of full understanding that not only are they courting the parent, they’re courting the kids. It’s a package deal. This notion, however, is one that cannot be confirmed without observing the interaction between the kids and newcomer. As first impressions are lasting, it may be wise to work together and choose the best times and place to conduct the big intro. The first encounter could sometimes be quite awkward, no doubt, but it really doesn’t have to be if it’s done the right way – meaning, it’s all about the kids and you just happen to tagging along! Here are a few first date friendly places to get to know each other and have a little fun at the same time!
