Last month, the Internet blew up with news that controversial televangelist Creflo Dollar launched a fundraiser in hopes of receiving assistance in purchasing a $65 million private jet to be used by his ministry for global missions.
The fundraiser attracted much backlash as many wondered why he would ask supporters and members to fund such an extravagant endeavor and within a few days, communications reps for the ministry announced that the campaign had been canceled.
Apparently, although the fundraiser was put to an end, Creflo still felt justified in asking the public to donate to the cause because he responded to critics in the form of a sermon preached at his Georgia church.
“I never once came to you and asked you for a dime for this airplane,” he told members.
He then went on to say that Creflo Dollar Ministries has “over 3 million donors around the world” who could have supported the cause.
“You cannot stop and you cannot curse what God has blessed,” he continued. “Half the people that are commenting on the Internet don’t even know me. They don’t know this ministry. They don’t know what we do. That’s why they ask the question: ‘What does a preacher need with an airplane? If you knew what we did then you wouldn’t ask that question. But you don’t know what we do…”
“If you think a $65 million plane was too much, if they discover that there’s life on Mars, they gon’ need to hear the Gospel and I’m gon have to believe God for a $1 billion space shuttle because we got to preach the Gospel on Mars. I dare you to tell me I can’t dream. Dare you to tell me I can’t believe God.”
I don’t have a heaven or hell to place anyone in. Perhaps God did promise Creflo that he would own that expensive jet someday. At the same time, I have to admit that no matter how he flips it or attempts to use the Word of God to justify this particular fundraiser, there’s just something about this entire situation that rubs me the wrong way.
Anyway, you can check out a clip from the sermon below. Thoughts?
