Music Videos Directed By Solange's Fiance, Alan Ferguson

We all heard yesterday that 28-year-old Solange Knowles is all set to marry music video director Alan Ferguson, 51, this weekend. And while we know that the two make a very charming couple, what else do we know about him? Well, I do know that he’s a pretty accomplished director, and he has worked behind the camera for many, many years. In fact, he’s actually behind some of our favorite videos over the years…

“Who You Wit” by Jay Z

“Who You Wit” was a song put out for the soundtrack of the 1997 film Sprung. While the video featured clips of the film (and a cameo by Joe Torry), Ferguson mostly shot Jigga man as he partook in a “Playa of the Year” contest, which he won of course. It had a very The Mack feel, which is why so many people enjoyed the visuals.

“Only You (Bad Boy Remix)” by 112

This video, for the classic song, went with the usual ’90s video tropes: women doing choreographed dances in tight clothing, the artist(s) bopping around in shiny suits and flashy cars. Actually, make that the usual ’90s Bad Boy video tropes…

“Cupid’s Chokehold” by Gym Class Heroes

Who didn’t love the crumping Cupid? In the visuals for the Gym Class Heroes’ breakout hit, lead singer Travis McCoy falls in and out of love with different women Cupid hopes will be a match. McCoy finally finds his match with a pre-fame Katy Perry, whom he actually dated in real life.

“Green Light” by John Legend feat. Andre 3000

Talk about a party! In this posh clip, we got to see a different side of John Legend (as in, away from his piano…and dancing!), who is hosting what looks like the freshest house party since the one we witnessed in Nelly’s “E.I.” video. And any party with Andre 3000’s fine and reclusive self is a must.

“Party” by Beyonce feat. J. Cole

Speaking of parties, a preggers Beyoncé had one last big Summer bash before Blue Ivy’s arrival. Chilling at a trailer park and a hotel, the singer, her sister Solange (ironically) and friends jigged a little, played in the pool and looked fabulous all at the same time. The clip earned Ferguson a BET “Video Director of the Year” award in 2012. When he picked it up with Beyoncé, he professed his love to Solange in front of the viewing audience. How sweet!

“Electric Lady” by Janelle Monae

Get waaaaay down! In this clip for the song from the album of the same name, Monae gives us a peek into her version of Greek life, with the singer and her electric lady friends taking part in the sorority, Electro Phi Beta. They throw a party that includes a step show, a marching band that Monae leads, and some star-studded cameos. Ferguson is also behind Monae’s video, “Prime Time,” featuring Miguel.

“Dance, Dance” by Fall Out Boy

At this point, it should be clear that Ferguson is pretty good at filming parties and making them look like the ultimate bashes to be at. He did that for Fall Out Boy’s “Dance, Dance” video, where the band was filmed performing, and then in character as nerds. The nerds inevitably come out on top by the end of very live homecoming soiree.

“Hot N’ Cold” by Katy Perry

In this video for Perry’s second hit single (after “I Kissed A Girl”), the singer struggles with her fiancé, who is getting his runaway groom on after getting cold feet on their wedding day. Perry chases him, alongside her crunk a** bridesmaids, who finally corner him before he wakes up from a daydream back at their wedding, ready to say ‘I do.’

“Floatin’ On Your Love (Bad Boy Remix)” by The Isley Brothers

Throwback! You might not remember this one, but I was always a big fan of this collaboration between The Isley Brothers, Angela Winbush, Lil Kim and 112 (with a cameo from Puffy in the video). “Mr. Big” and Winbush serenade one another…until Lil Kim hops out of a cake ready to set that place out (and leave with Mr. Big’s rolex).

“Feelin’ It” by Jay Z

Again, way before he was putting a ring on Solange’s finger, Ferguson was working side-by-side with Jay Z. The two collaborated not only on “Who You Wit,” but “Feelin’ It,” from Jay’s debut album Reasonable Doubt. It’s good living as usual for the rapper, as he lived it up for the camera in the Caribbean.

“Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield

Bedingfield is known for more than just singing the theme song (“Unwritten”) to MTV’s old show “The Hills.” She also had the track, “Pocketful of Sunshine,” and the video was directed by Ferguson. It features Bedingfield fed up and singing at work in a stuffy office building before breaking free (as in literally jumping out of the window with a parachute), and encouraging other people to do the same.
