No matter where you come from, women are hard on other women. But these ways that black women judge each other should really come to a stop.

Hair

Sheryl Underwood reminded us that hair was still a major issue when she shaded black children with “nasty” “nappy beads” as not being as worthy as those with “beautiful, long silky stuff.”

Since long before Madame CJ Walker went into business, black women have been battling over “good hair” and “bad hair” and shading those with both.

Skin Color

Kevin Hart says people shaded Eniko because she’s “exotic,” people are throwing “light skin/dark skin” parties and as long as people are still posting things like these, we still have a major problem with shading each other over skin color.

Why We Should Stop

Colorism doesn’t stop at shade. It’s a global problem that more of us should get behind eradicating. Or at least we can get brothers like Lil’ Wayne to stop shading dark-skinned women who look just like his daughter :/

Why We Need To Stop

Single parenthood isn’t a problem. When a single white celebrity adopts a child, we applaud. Why? Because politicians didn’t spend millions demonizing single black mothers to cut funding from welfare — a stereotype that many black women still cling to today.

When NeNe Leakes defended her nose job and newer, thinner nose by saying, “I still wanted to look like NeNe, the black woman that I am, but a better version.” It reminded us that not only do black women shade each other for their features, they shade themselves as well.

Ask a black woman her race and sometimes it’s difficult to get a straight answer. It’s one of the byproducts of not-quite-post-racial America. Somewhere along the line, women got the idea that being other-than-black was better.
