Doing the Most: Hair Fake, Nails Fake, Everything Fake…

1. Colored contact lenses

My rule of thumb for colored lenses is that if you can’t see, you might as well have fun while you’re correcting your vision.  I’ve seen very natural-looking colored lenses that enhance your natural eye color in very realistic looking hues.  The problem comes when you’re rocking those bright baby blues with a waist-length bleached blond weave.  Overkill?  Maybe just a tad.  Even worse is when you don’t invest money into FDA approved lenses that are safe to wear and you spend most of the day blinking back tears and rocking eyes that have more red cracks in them than the bottom of Louboutins after a 5K.  I’m willing to bet that your bright browns and hazels look better than puffy irritated blues and greens any day.

2. Hair extensions

Like I mentioned before, I love myself a good weave, the key word being “good”.  The thing to remember with weaves is that you should be the one wearing it and not vice versa.  If your weave has taken on a life of its own complete with character, then it may be time to re-evaluate your hair style.  Extensions or not, your head of hair is your crowning glory.  It is the supporting actress to your lead role.  The mistake many women make is believing that a weave doesn’t require maintenance; it’s still important to maintain your natural hair underneath, and style the weave so that you get your money’s worth.  Many of us choose this hairstyle for convenience, but it’s still important to keep brush and oil sheen handy.

3. False eyelashes

Eyelashes extensions have the ability to take your look from dull to dramatic, but when done wrong they can take your look from pretty to pitiful.  The most any of us need for daytime is a great mascara that both lengthens and defines.  Many women have natural eyelashes that are a nice length but end up ripping them out by repeatedly applying false eyelashes.  If you are looking for some extra flutter with your flirt for a night out or a photo shoot, it’s important that eyelashes are applied with care and consideration.  They can be applied in sections or thinned out so that they naturally compliment your look without overwhelming your face.  Remember, eyelashes enhance your eyes and keep them safe by keeping dirt and dust at bay.  The goal is for your eyes to stand out because of the lashes, not hide behind them.

4. Acrylic tips

Some of us are chronic nail biters whose natural nails were saved from sure elimination because of acrylic tips. For others it’s our only way to express our creativity at a structured, corporate 9-5.  While we are keeping our nails did, hair did and everything big, it’s important to know that fancy has its limits.  If your nails are so long that they make simple tasks like using a fork or signing a document difficult or painful, they may be doing more harm than good, for your health, as well as your look. And despite the length it’s important to know that that acrylic overlays and tips can weaken your natural nails.  Here’s a tip: It may be a good idea to give your nails some rest from the artificial every now and then.

5. Booty Pop

I remember when I was a child, my mom would get these beauty supply catalogs and as I flipped through the back pages I would find myself thinking, “Why in the world would a woman ever want to wear padded panties?”  I thought maybe it was a product that gave you instant cushion wherever you went.  Well with the arrival of “Booty Pop” it’s clear that padded panties are less about keeping the wearer comfortable as much as they are about making her appear a little sexier.  Whether your curves come courtesy of KFC and good genes or the UPS man and a pair of good jeans, if you find yourself purchasing appendages, they look best when they are proportional.  A size 0 waist and a size 24 behind looks ridiculous (and not in a good way).

6. Tattoos

Having a tattoo used to be something that made you edgy and different, but nowadays not having one is actually much more unique.  If you decide that a needle is just what you need to take your look to the next level it’s important that your tattoo compliments your other great features instead of stealing the show.  I’ve seen Hot tats and I’ve seen ones that make my three year old niece look like Michelangelo.  Placement, content and significance are good things to consider while your shopping for ink.  That “5 Star B**ch” tattoo across the middle of your chest might seem just a little silly fifteen years from now.  Just saying…

7. Padded Bras

Victoria’s Secret has made the difference between many one night stands and long term relationships, but if your breasts are being pushed passed your collarbone, they might be padded to their limit.  Padded bras can give the girls a little help in your low cut little black dress, but they shouldn’t be pressed to the point of pain.  If your bra makes noises every time you give someone a high-five, you might want to give the girls some air.

8. Collagen Injections

I am convinced that collagen injections never successfully give the illusion of plump pouty lips.  What they do is mystify me. Why would any woman ever purposely want to look as if she has just had a bad reaction to surf and turf? Lip liner and gloss can work wonders in making a thin set of smackers look super Hot, but this should be where the enhancement ends.  Why pay a doctor for what an allergic reaction will do for free?
