Essence Atkins To Officiate Bestie Gabrielle Union's Wedding

Earlier today, we told you that Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade reportedly went as far as to have their wedding guests sign confidentiality agreements to keep details about the ceremony from leaking to the media. But it looks like Gabby’s bestie, Essence Atkins, never received the hush-hush memo.

Hip Hollywood recently caught up with the “Haunted House 2” actress, who revealed that she and her husband, Jaime Mendez, will be officiating the couple’s ceremony this weekend.

“I’m not feeling a way about [Gabby not having bridesmaids] because I’m officiating the ceremony,” Essence revealed.

“My husband and I are officiating the ceremony,” she continued. “My husband did a ceremony for Alfonso Ribeiro a couple of years ago and they asked us to do it together so we are officiating.”

The wife and mother went on to say that Gabby’s ceremony will actually be her first time officiating a wedding

“This will be my first time. No pressure! No pressure whatsoever!”

While I have to admit that this news is extremely random, having your bestie officiate your wedding ceremony sounds like it has the potential to be pretty cool. I also can’t blame Gabby for wanting someone who knows her personally to officiate, considering that the reverend at her last ceremony didn’t even pronounce her name correctly.

“The pastor who married me—the first time—he didn’t even get my name right,” Gabrielle told Arsenio Hall back in February. “Yeah, no. He refused to come to the rehearsal dinner and then didn’t say my name correctly. I even pronounced my own name incorrectly so this should’ve been a sign that it wasn’t gonna work.”
