As much as we would all love to head off to some exotic location, sometimes it’s not in our cards. Taking a vacation costs money — travel to get there, getting around to see the sites, hotel accommodations, dining, and money spent on activities and souvenirs. This is why many of us turn to staycations. They help us save money and provide the opportunity to enjoy the things around us. Here are some fun ways to enjoy summer without leaving your home.

Grill/BBQ

Don’t be afraid to use your oven,” points out Sephi Coyle, director of culinary programs at Sur La Table. Whether you live in an apartment or just don’t have the space to grill outdoors, you can still have that dream barbecue with the help of grill pans.

Host a TV show marathon

Have you been dying to start or catch up on a television show, but never had the time? Call up some gal pals for a day inside to binge watch. This trending pastime is popular these days with more and more people catching episodes in bulk. Hopefully you have a flexible summer work schedule to make this happen.

Watch movies outdoors

If you have the space then you need to give this idea a try. Rather than pay gas money to see a movie in theaters, invite people over to catch a flick in the comforts of your backyard. This is a really intimate way to enjoy the season in a casual setting.

Turn a bedroom into a getaway

It might be hard to relax in your bedroom as a summer vacation when you do that as is. Should you have a second bedroom transform it into a seasonal getaway that will make your staycation a bit more enjoyable. Include fresh bath towels, a water carafe (if you want to get fancy) and whatever else you need to feel pampered.

Camp out

You don’t have to pitch a tent to go camping. Remove the mattress off your bed and place it in a common area — or go the traditional route with sleeping bags. If you have lanterns, light them, and don’t skimp on making s’mores and other camping favorites.

Participate in a block party

This summer activity might have you leave your front doorstep but will be worth the trip. Ask around your neighborhood to see if anyone is interested in helping out with a block party. It’s a great opportunity to get out, meet new people and even network. You’re always just a handshake away from your next opportunity.
