Basic, minimal, sporty, simple, casual. These are the adjectives that have been used to describe the latest fashion trend called “normcore.”

Normcore fashion is all about “finding liberation in being nothing special” and being a part of the crowd instead of straying away from it. Ordinary is now the new extraordinary folks. So read on for the top ten stores you can shop this season to find your own normcore looks.

The Gap

Look to The Gap as a solid retail introduction into the normcore world. That famously familiar blue and white color palette, boyfriend jeans, and classic khaki pants are perfect for blending in on a trip to the supermarket or on the road to a faraway tourist destination.

Banana Republic

If you work for corporation on a daily basis, then chances are that you have been adhering to your own, or the company’s, version of normcore for years. Ironically, now those v-neck pullovers, chinos, and cardigans are en vogue.

Nike

Since last year, sneakers have become the ultimate choice in footwear and our weary feet can only thank us. Due to the popularity of kicks like the Kobes, Jordans, and Air Force 1s, Nike is fusing high fashion with relief. Maybe beauty doesn’t have to equal pain after all.

L.L. Bean

“L.L. Bean” in the same sentence as “trendy”? Well, yes, now because of normcore, those monogrammed backpacks are officially cool. Two-strapping it is optional, but something tells me that you may get as much flak for using only one strap, like Channing Tatum’s character did in 21 Jump Street.

J. Crew

Are you an ardent fan of turtlenecks and shorts in every color? J. Crew produces some of the best in both and more. Nothing more says normcore like the casual, post-Dawson’s Creek American style of this brand.

Old Navy

Like J. Crew, Banana Republic, and The Gap, Old Navy has been always been known for a particular brand of minimalism. However, Old Navy, for its plethora of fashion options, is the more affordable trademark to invest in, especially if on the hunt for basic tees, button-down shirts, and other pieces for last-minute jaunts to the beach.

American Apparel

Made in the USA and sweatshop free (though the ads are exploitative), American Apparel is the king and queen of the off-the-cuff normcore style for an 18-to-34 demographic. Since its inception, this retailer has combined effortless fashion for the young and hip and brought fanny packs back in style.

Levi’s

Levi’s is synonymous with understated and unassuming, so an American staple such as this denim label would be a welcome addition to your budding normcore wardrobe.

Macy’s

Count on Macy’s to carry all of your “ordinary” clothing needs. Stock up on Cuddl Duds to wear under your new INC International Concepts cardigan for next Winter, and weed through Karen Scott, Alfani, and Tommy Hilfiger essential skirts to satisfy your budget and add to your attire.
