There’s a disease going around affecting millions of people each year. The symptoms may include dreading of Monday mornings and the over anticipation of Friday nights. More severely, these symptoms can also be accompanied by headaches, weight gain, or sometimes depression. While this disease has no specific medical term, most people who experience these symptoms usually share a a few common phrases, including, “I hate my job” or “my job makes me sick!”
While these can be considered exaggerations, the latter statement may hold some truth. In fact, according to Families and Work Institute, a nonprofit research company, the percentage of workers who claim they are in excellent health is steadily decreasing since the initial study in 2002.
Currently one in three workers has at least one symptom of clinical depression, 41 percent say they feel stressed often or very often, and one in five have trouble falling asleep. So besides the fact that you despise your long commute, would rather not speak to half of your co-workers, and are certain that you work with the boss from hell, could your job literally be the cause of some of your mental and physical illnesses? Possibly.
Still in an economy where quitting a job may leave you indefinitely unemployed, it’s important to find a work/life balance and pay careful attention to your health while in your current position. If your situation allows you to leave a job that is emotionally, physically, and mentally wearing you down, then it may be best to leave; but if you’re like most of the U.S population and need your job to sustain some level of financial comfort, consider these tips to assist you in finding a healthy balance.
Keep in mind, your health comes first. You can eventually leave your job, but transitioning out smoothly with another job offer may be the best option. Before you make a big career decision, consider the following advice:

Why Are You Unhappy?
Before you make any drastic changes, first get to the root of the problem. Why is your job causing so much mental anguish? If it’s your boss, figure out a way to work peacefully together. If it’s the workload, develop ways to work more efficiently (basically smarter, not harder). Before you can begin making changes, you must figure out what the issues are and what needs to be changed. And be realistic, if your long commute, working forty hours or not being able to have brunch with friends is what’s bothering you. You could be suffering from another disease called laziness.

Change Your Attitude (at least temporarily)
Instead of focusing on what you don’t like, figure out that one or two things that you do like about your job. If it’s only the monetary gain that allows you to socialize, share, and pay bills, so be it. While money isn’t’ everything, if this is the one thing you like about your job, remember it. The goal is to focus on the good at your job, at least until you transition out.

Surround Yourself With Positivity
While you can’t control what the entire building is doing or looks like, you can ensure that your working space is positive. This could mean having positive affirmations on your desk or pictures of people you actually like. Also, keeping a tidy space allows your mind to feel less cluttered. Consider your working space, the positivity zone; don’t allow negative thoughts or people to interfere.

Have a Plan
Sometimes looking towards the future allows us to appreciate the present. Consider your job an experience preparing you for a better situation. Begin making plans to transition. Pick a day (not on the clock!) to send out resumes and brush up on interviewing skills. Having plans and goals allows you to see your situation as only temporary.
Have you ever had a job that impacted your physical or mental/emotional health? What did you do to make the situation better?
