Whether it was an A to D list celebrity, a Facebook album obsessed female college student, or almost every girl standing in line at the club, firetruck red lipstick was the trend on everyone’s lips last year. While pale reds softly utter everyday conventionalism, something about bright red lipstick screams that you’re edgy, bold and chock full of confidence. But you can’t rely on that scarlet red forever.

If you’re still looking to be that edgy chick that gets all the compliments for her lipstick choices, it’s time to be ready and willing to kiss off the apricot and blush reds, and see how daring your smackers can really be this year. Check out our lip color suggestions that go way beyond Ronald McDonald red!

Go Nude

Don’t let the mainstream women’s magazines and blogs fool you. A bare nude lipstick can be worn whether you’re light, dark, blue, black, or anything in between. Nude lipstick is good for toning down the face when the eyes are adorned in heavy liners or eyeshadows, especially the smoky eye. Nude looks Hot with oranges and pinks, along with a wide array of other bright tones. Some shades of nude do work especially well for certain skin tones, but there is definitely a butt bald naked hue fresh enough for everyone.

Dutty Wine

Wine and dark plum-hued lipstick is vampy and sultry at the same time, especially when the rest of your makeup is simple. No dark eyes, no bright eyeshadows–totally omit any blush. A fresh faced look is best. Like bright red lipstick, if you want to be bold, you can skip all the other makeup trimmings and just color your lips for a night out. Wine colors look luscious on darker skin, and look best on everyone in general in matte sticks. Save the overlay of gloss for colors that need some extra pop.

Orange You Pretty?

As unappealing as orange lipstick sounds on paper, the color is flirtatious and full of energy. Some say that the color is best worn on lighter shades, but don’t knock it until you try it. Stay away from the matte lipsticks for this color, as a dry orange might be too bright. Throw a little gloss on, and feel free to try the color with bright eyeshadows, or minimalist makeup as well. If the orange is a bit too eclectic for your taste, you can also mix it with a hint of red to make it acceptable for afternoon rendezvous and showing off at the clubs.

Foxy Brown

Not too long ago, brown lipstick was all the way in style. I’m pretty sure it was around the time when people put thick lipliner around it. But don’t fret, you don’t have to revert to that kind of tackiness to wear brown lipstick and make it Hot. Brown lip color doesn’t have to be the darkest of hues, rather, it can be a light shimmering brown too. If you go for a dark shade of brown, make sure that dark bags or circles get concealed for an unblemished immaculate appearance. Brown colors look beautiful on brown skin, so be on the lookout for coffee shades and rich mochas, which are appropriate at all times of the day, especially in the afternoon.

Pretty in Pink

How avant-garde is hot pink lipstick on a chocolate sistah? And trust me, in fashion, avant-garde is a very good thing. The color is very girly and amusing and can be worn with really dark fits: black cocktail dresses, a pair of jeans paired with a dark top and more. But yes, the hot pink can be worn with some flirty blues and other hues. Miss Nicki Minaj even displayed her own “Pink Friday” shade through M.A.C. Cosmetics. Wear a light pink lip with big eyelashes and some playful eyeshadow. Skip trying to look like Barbie, just look haute and hot as yourself with this one.

Purple Rain

A light purple lip is a hot color to wear, especially once the weather warms up. It’s spicy and goes great with stark multi-colored fits. It’s a lip color, whether lacquer or shimmer lipstick, that shows off your personality and says you’re ready for the weekend. The color looks great matched with flirty lids or thickly-lined eyes. If your purple is too bright, feel free to mix shades and keep it steppin’.

Black on Black

Are you daring enough to go all black everything, including your lipstick? Think Janet Jackson in the “What’s It Gonna Be” video alongside Busta Rhymes. The Queen Bee, Beyoncé pouted her lips in black when she teamed up with Lady Gaga for the “Telephone” video, and the look wasn’t as big of a no-no as it could’ve been. It’s definitely something to be worn on the trendsetter, not the fearful. The only downside to wearing colors as pitch black as this one is that you’ll have to be careful with your smiles and conversations, cause one wrong move can put the worst looking stain on those pearly whites. But if your willing to put up a valiant effort, the color of course can be paired with all black fits, nude ensembles, or black bottoms mixed with high fluting colorful shirts.
