When we heard that Dr. Phil was going to be interviewing DMX, we assumed that Dr. Phil was going to be his normal, hard hitting self. He was going to ask DMX the tough questions, make him take responsibility for his actions and be honest about the problem he still seems to have. But that was not the case. That’s not, at all, what we saw today. Instead, it seemed that Dr. Phil had DMX on the show to boost ratings, DMX was there to collect a check and maybe even tell a joke or two. There was so much applause from the audience, you would have thought DMX was there to promote an album and not discuss the issues he’s had with drugs, the law and paying child support. It was odd and even a bit frustrating. But there were a few interesting moments you should note in case you missed the interview.

Dr. Phil: Why do you have so many children?

DMX: I’m not the one having them.

*Sigh* Of course you’re not the one having them. We don’t need a biology lesson. The issue is, though you admittedly can’t afford child support of your 12 children, you still continue to have them. Dr. Phil was wondering if perhaps there was a reason for this seemingly irrational behavior and you completely dodged the question.

On running through the hallway unclothed

DMX: “Who wouldn’t do that?! It was a dare.”

I remember seeing this video and thinking this was some type of behavior the drug had influenced. And while I was glad Dr. Phil asked him about it, because we were all wondering, I don’t know if we’re getting the full story. DMX said he was dared to do it and then asked the audience if they would have done the same. A few people raised their hands and it seemed that DMX took solace in the fact that “30 percent of the audience” would have streaked.

DMX: I was introduced to my first drug when I was about 8.
Crack was introduced to me when I was 14.

In probably one of the most honest moments of the interview, DMX spoke about his history with drug use. Tragically, he recalled using drugs for the first time at just 8 years old. I can’t even fathom what it would mean to use drugs as a child. This part so sad. I can’t even being to imagine the things DMX has seen throughout his life. It’s so much dysfunction and brokenness.

DMX: “By the grace of God I haven’t been high for more than a year, let’s say that.”

I’ve once heard a doctor say that addicts or former addicts, however you want to put it, know the exact day and time they stopped using drugs and therefore how long they’ve been clean. I would love for DMX to be clean, but his answer sounded a little shaky.

DMX: “You have to pay $1.5 million dollars to get a license back? They take your passport which disabled me from going overseas and making money. How am I supposed to make money if I can’t drive.”

When Dr. Phil went over DMX’s rap sheet, he noticed that there were several instances of DMX driving without a license. DMX explained that because he can’t pay $1.5 million dollars in child support, his license has been suspended. He argued, and I had to agree, it makes it difficult to make money when you can’t drive or travel and perform overseas.

DMX: “That’s just me without a haircut. I just got a messed up hairline. But you’re still holding on. Let it all go.”

When Dr. Phil put up this picture from one of DMX’s many mug shots, instead of addressing the crime that landed him there, DMX deflected by talking about his physical appearance and even found a commonality between he and Dr. Phil, with their hairlines.

Do you make any effort not to get women pregnant?

“When I look in my children’s eyes, I can’t imagine life without them.”

Again a deflection. Hopefully, you don’t regret any of your children. But the question, which I believe he tried to ask earlier, is do you make an effort to protect yourself when you’re having sex. His response pretty much lets us know what’s up.

Do you think your children are affected by your antics?

DMX: “It may be rough for them in school. Kids can be cruel. But they’re warriors at the same time. It gives them a tough skin.”

Come on D. There are lot of life experiences that will help children to develop a tough skin. Their father cussing women out on television, choosing drugs over a relationship with them and streaking in the hallways should not be among them. Again, he doesn’t take responsibility and Dr. Phil didn’t challenge him on this.

DMX: “Unless you’ve been there, you don’t know what you’re talking about, so don’t speak on it.”

DMX admitted that while he’s not addicted to any hard drugs any more, he still says he drinks and smokes weed. Dr. Phil did transition into a serious moment by warning him that even using these drugs could send him back to his old ways. DMX got defensive and told Dr. Phil that he didn’t know what he was talking about because he had never been an addict. In the one moment of accountable, just as the show was ending, Dr. Phil went in and told DMX not to tell him he didn’t know what he was talking about because he had attended several funerals for people who thought they could dabble with marijuana and alcohol, in lieu of heavier drugs.
