You’re offered training to build your skills

Many companies offer their employees training to build their expertise and skills in the particular field. You might be getting offers and nudges from your boss to train in a particular skill to prepare you for the next ring in the ladder of your professional success. A great way to make a promotion happen for yourself is to be proactive and ask for training if you desire it for your next position. It’ll position you as not only proactive, but willing to learn what you need to know to earn a promotion wholeheartedly.

Your current boss is getting promoted

One possible tell-tale sign that you might be in the running for a promotion is the promotion of your current boss or supervisor. If your direct head is getting promoted or taking on another job within or outside of the company, this could give you the lead to be next in line for their position!

Your contributions aren’t going unnoticed

You are being praised more for the work that you do for the company, whether it’s proactively heading a big project or making sure your other co-workers are up-to-speed in their duties. Your current boss could be acknowledging your work to upper-level management, which could set you up for other positions that need the same productivity and diligence in the future. It may not be glaringly apparent, but you should see little signs from execs that you never really speak with that your work is recognized.

Your new process has been implemented

If you established a new process that your company now uses in its daily operations, you might be on the road to a promotion soon. Management could have taken notice of this and could set you up for a higher-level position that gives you the opportunity to implement more positive changes for the company because it has been proven to work before in your current position.

You are asked to train other staff members

Being asked to train and mentor other staff members or co-workers could sometimes raise a red flag as well as a green one. Should you be excited that your job might be transitioning to a higher position and you are training in preparation for that. Or, should you be leery of whether your job might be in jeopardy? Chances are, it’s the latter. It would have to be a really awful company that would have you train the people who will replace you. You wouldn’t want to work for them anyway! So take it in stride, and train your co-worker well and with the same dedication you would use to show your current employer what you currently do.

You’ve completed your advanced degree

Completing an advanced degree, like your Master’s or Doctorate, while trying to climb the corporate ladder could be a major boost for your promotion potential. Great management takes notice of when their employees are gradually acquiring new expertise and education to better perform at the company, which will make you better positioned for a new job.

You become an asset in company meetings

Meetings could be intimidating to some, having to vocalize your expertise in front of co-workers, partner companies and upper-level management. Your ideas could not become an asset to the company meetings, counting on your knowledge, interests and skills to push the company forward. If you are asked to become more of a leader in the boardroom during meetings, you might be getting groomed for a higher-level position within your company in the near future.

Upper-level management takes you under their wing

Besides implementing your new process the company now uses or have developed new skills to use in your current position. This is when you know they’ve got their eye on you. You’re getting more responsibility and they’re literally creating a job around your increasing and improving skills. This leads to more meetings with the higher ups, and more inclusion in things that, at one point, were above your title. A new title is probably on the way.

The company has opened up more room to grow

If your company has recently undergone a major shift in management or a restructuring  this could be a sign that your duties may be expanding across the company. While not all company changes are for the best, they are not always signs of layoffs either. If you have weathered the storm of layoffs in your company, or officially know of departments that are growing and changing in your sector, this might be an opportunity for a promotion.
