The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities estimates that only 10 percent of the 105 black colleges and universities in the country offer online degrees, as opposed to one-third of the country’s 4,500 universities.
Syndicated radio host and Tuskegee University graduate Tom Joyner has donated $7 million to start HBCUsOnline.com, which launched in September 2010. The site offers access to accredited online degree programs from HBCUs. Thus far, Hampton University and Texas Southern University have signed on as partners of HBCUsOnline.com and more schools are expected in the next several months.
