It seems as if there is a dichotomy when it comes to the stereotypes of preacher’s kids.  Some people think of the goody-goody, almost nauseatingly perfect kids (for example:  The Jonas Brothers, who were open about their faith and their purity).  While others seem to think of the wildly rebellious kids who would throw wild parties when their parents were gone (example:  Katy Perry, kissing girls and liking it and what-not).  The reason why I used The Jo-Bros and Katy Perry is because they are indeed preachers’ kids, and seem to fit those stereotypes.  After doing some research, I was able to find a few more, let’s see if any of these surprised you.

Kelis

Yes, before the “Milkshake” singer was bringing boys and Nas to the yard, her father was bringing congregations to the altar of his Pentecostal church.

Aretha Franklin

The “Queen of Soul,” the booming voice of a generation, and hopefully the helpful judge of future seasons of American Idol.  This icon was raised in the Baptist church that her father was a minister in, and honed her vocals by singing in the choir.

Wyclef

Before he was flagged on Instagram for “Speed-o-gate,” he considered following in  the footsteps of his Nazarene Pastor father.  After considering divinity school, he decided to follow his passion of music instead, which caused a riff (which is now repaired) between he and his father.

Marvin Gaye

Sadly, we know this story.  The singer who has been held as an icon to many and inspiration for other current R&B singers, was brought up in the church, watching his father behind the pulpit.  After a strenuous relationship with his dad, a success relationship in the music  business, and crippling relationship with drugs, Marvin Gaye was gunned down by his father.

Condoleezza Rice

The former Secretary of the State was also a preacher’s kid to her Presbyterian pastor father.  She grew up with strong conservative beliefs that would later shape her political standing.

Denzel Washington

The man, the actor, the legend.  Mr. Washington grew up watching his father behind a pulpit at his Pentecostal church. That foundation has helped keep the successful actor very grounded.  It was also something that he had in common with Malcolm X, whose father was a pastor of a Baptist church.

Alice Cooper

Now this was a shocker, wasn’t it?  The shock rocker who unintentionally sent a chicken to his death by throwing it back into a the crowd that threw it on stage was brought up in the church.  As a matter of fact, Mr. Cooper still holds on to his Christian beliefs heavily, citing that he can be a Christian and still rock out.

The Karashian Clan

Well, Kris Jenner doesn’t really stand behind a pulpit and preach, but she did become an ordained minister to marry one of her friends.  Kris Jenner is also hoping that she can use her new talents of the cloth to marry off a few of her children.
