We all know that social networking can cause plenty of heated arguments. From disses to rumors and everything in between, it’s not uncommon for someone, even a celebrity, to quit a social networking site, such as Twitter when things get a little too heated — or they forget 18.75 million people are watching their every tweet. Here are 15 celebrities who temporarily or permanently quit Twitter.

Chris Brown

After getting into a heated match with Jenny Johnson about Rihanna a couple of weeks ago, Chris Brown temporarily deleted his Twitter account. Unsurprisingly, he was reactivated and reusing his account the very next day. This isn’t the first or the last time Chris will quit Twitter.

Miley Cyrus

As active and as widely followed as Miley Cyrus is on Twitter today, it’s surprising that she once quit the site. Back in 2009 she quit the social media network claiming that she wanted some privacy. Recently Miley’s taken a break from Twitter due to the death of her dog.

Charlie Sheen

After his drunken rampages and random thoughts, Charlie Sheen decided that it was time to quit Twitter after 16 months. He sent out one of his last tweets on July 9, 2012. He hasn’t used his account since.

Lily Allen

Lily Allen made the tough decision back in 2009 that Twitter and other social networking sites were becoming an addiction. She opted to throw out a majority of her electronics. However, Lily eventually made a re-apperance on the website but had another quitting run-in this year. In July she decided to temporarily quit the website after a racist tweet from a Ministry of Defense soldier that said: “just seen you bought s**t I meant adopted a child from Africa.”

John Mayer

Back in June 2010, John Mayer decided that it was time to delete his Twitter account. This came after he confessed to being a tweetaholic. Though he did go through with his plan, John Mayer eventually joined Twitter again.

LeAnn Rimes

After several controversial tweets and drama with her ex-husband’s new girlfriend, LeAnn decided to pull the plug. She stated that there were plenty of other ways to stay in touch with her fans, and Twitter wasn’t one of them. This was back in July 2012, but she has returned since her temporary hiatus.

Ashton Kutcher

Though Ashton Kutcher hasn’t physically quit Twitter, it seems as though his management is writing his tweets for him. After a controversial tweet regarding the Penn State scandal, Ashton decided it was time to have someone else manage him account. At least he’s trying to stay out of trouble.

Kanye West

In October 2012, Kanye West randomly decided that he wanted to quit Twitter. He left a final tweet saying that he was leaving, but promised to be back. He also opted to delete all of his past tweets. After the seemingly sad goodbye, Kanye was back on Twitter after a day.

James Franco

After just being on Twitter for a little less than two months, James Franco waved goodbye to Twitter. His reasons for leaving included getting sick of the website and the hassle it brings with it. James did eventually return to Twitter under a new account.

Adele

Internet trolls and rude people were enough to drive Adele off of Twitter. She was taunted and insulted for her weight and her looks. Enough was enough in November 2012 when she and her newborn son received death threats.

Courtney Love

Courtney Love has had a love-hate relationship with Twitter since she’s joined. She has quit and gone on hiatus several times, but never permanently. Her most recent decision to quit Twitter was due to her mistakenly posting personal pictures of herself that revealed a bit much for the Twitter world.

Amanda Bynes

Troubled actress Amanda Bynes has had an on-and-off relationship with Twitter. She first retired from Twitter in September 2010 after she announced her retirement from acting. In January 2011, Amanda returned to Twitter, but with a private account.

Sinead O’Connor

Sinead O’Connor is a mess of emotions, and her tweets proved it. She decided to use Twitter as her media to express her suicidal thoughts and eventually left the website. She admitted that the tweets were her cry for help.

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin has quit Twitter twice so far. He said he first e-goodbye after ranting about getting escorted off of an airplane. In July 2012 he quit after he tied the knot with Hilaria Thomas.
