Sheryl Underwood

Sheryl Underwood is an American comedienne and current 23rd International President of the sorority. Known for her comedic performances on several shows and films including The Beauty Shop and I Got the Hook Up, Sheryl demonstrated her passion for comedy by founding the African-American Female Comedian Association. A self proclaimed “sexually progressive, God-fearing, Black Republican. ” When she’s not cracking jokes, Sheryl’s being active with the NAACP or engaged in business with the NPHC.

Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston was a writer, folklorist and philanthropist. After arriving in New York City during the time of the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston became an integral part of the movement through contributing more than 50 novels and short stories. Best known for her 1937 novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston’s writing included African American dialect, which represented particular styles of speech, a controversial method of writing at that time. Nevertheless, Hurston continued to pursue writing and politics boldly. As a Republican, Zora wrote of injustice both domestic and abroad.

Gwendolyn Brooks

Gwendolyn Brooks was born in Topeka Kansas in 1917. At the age of 13 one of her first poems was published in a children’s book; this would be the precursor to her career as a great American poet. In 1950, Gwendolyn’s second book of poetry Annie Allen was given the Pulitzer Prize, making her the first African-American to win such an award. In 1968, she was made Poet Laureate of Illinois, the state of her life’s residence.

Syleena Johnson

Minnie Riperton

The late Minnie Riperton was born in November 1947. Known for her 1975 single “Lovin You,” Riperton is one singer to have gone way before her time. Her ability to sing in the 5 octave range, whistle register was unheard of and made her a favorite among recording artists and fans alike. After battling breast cancer for several years, Riperton died on July 12, 1979. Today she is survived by music engineer son, Marc Rudolph and Bridesmaids actress daughter, Maya Rudolph.
