Brandy Norwood and Sonja Norwood

Being a teenager is a very difficult time in your life, but the experience is probably even more intense when you’re famous.  Award winning singer and actress, Brandy, charmed her way into our hearts, acting in multiple mediums. There was a time when she was highly marketable.  Not wanting her daughter to be taken advantage of, Sonja became her manager, and this was a source of tension between the two.

In a 2002 interview in Oprah’s O magazine, Brandy, who was dealing with wanting to be rebellious and a people-pleaser would clash with her mom-ager because she felt like her mother occasionally saw her as just a commodity.   The standard of being perfect was hard for Brandy to deal with as well.  Sonja admitted that there were times when she was more of a manager when she should have been a mom and vice versa.  But with the birth of Brandy’s daughter, the two have a better relationship now.

Beyonce Knowles and Matthew Knowles

Ever since Beyonce was a child, her father held the reigns and directed the way her life and talent would lead her.  Creating a group for her, under the umbrella of his Music World Entertainment group, Destiny’s Child was born.

But in 2011, Beyonce and her father announced their professional split.  The split seemed amicable and Beyonce said that it was due to the fact that she had a desire to take her career on a new path.  But like anything celebrities do, rumors soon followed.  The split was marred with rumors of him borrowing money and not returning it from her 2011 tour.  Others cited that the split was due to Mr. Knowles alleged cheating on her mother, Tina Knowles.

No one can really say what is what, but if you want the answer from Beyonce’s own mouth, check out this video (at the 4:00 minute mark) and listen for yourself.

Usher Raymond and Jonetta Patton

Usher and his mother had a very close relationship, but with the appearance of Tameka in his life, there was a rift between the two.  After his union with Tameka, Usher fired his mother as his manager.  There were rumors that Jonetta and Tameka physically fought, and that could have been a cause of Usher choosing his wife’s side (if those rumors were true).  Once the marriage hit the crapper, Usher voiced his displeasure of almost losing that close relationship with his mother due to his marriage to Tameka in his song “Papers.”

DMX and his Mother

DMX always seemed to be a tough but troubled soul and all that came to the forefront with his appearance on VH1’s “Couple Therapy.”  Him and his wife Tashera Simmons went to work through the issues of infidelity, verbal abuse, and his past indiscretions.  It wasn’t until an episode where he discusses his traumatic relationship with his mother that sort of cleared up how he deals with women.

He expressed to the counselor that he never had a relationship with his mother where he could just call her “Mommy.”  There was a lot of pain growing up after his mother left him at the young age of 7. He expressed how wanted to be loved by his mother, claiming that she never told him that she loved him.  They reunited on the show where she explained her actions and apologized for never explaining things to him.

T-Pain and his Father Shaheed Najm

Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, T-Pain had a close relationship with his father.  In 8th grade his father home schooled him, and apparently in such an enclosed space caused tensions to rise.   Having frequent arguments with his father, and leaving the house multiple times the two were always able to rebuild the bond.  But in 2005 T-Pain accused his father of trying to get $250,000 of back fees for managing him before he signed with Akon’s Konvict Music.

T-Pain’s father said that he did ask his son for some money for back pay, but T-Pain exaggerated the amount. The real reason for their rift was that there was the issues of his father’s crack cocaine usage.

The rift has since been mended between the two, before the father went into a coma due to his bad heart issues.  But he’s recovered now.

Katy Perry and Her Parents

Katy Perry was born in a religious household with her parents being pastors of a church.  She started off in the industry as a Christian singer, but later went the secular route.

In the past Perry talked negatively about her parents’ ultra-Christian values, and when she was in the process of her divorce from Russel Brand she felt that that was the last thing she needed.  Her mother preached a sermon saying how Katy’s divorce was in God’s plan to make more people receptive to hearing the Word.  Katy didn’t appreciate that.  Neither did she appreciate the anti-Semitic sermon her father preached later on that week.

Lindsay Lohan and Michael Lohan

Being a child star doesn’t guarantee a happy childhood.  No one exemplifies that more than Ms. Lindsay Lohan.  As a child her father dealt with alcoholism, drug abuse, and revolving door stints in jail.  In his inebriated state he would become abusive to their mother.  Once Lindsay began to book movies, her mother, Dina Lohan, took the family away from him.

Still dealing with the ghosts from her past, Lindsay sang a song that chronicled her issues with her father, and he in turn wrote a letter praising her for how beautiful it was, then he tried to write a song to her too…  The two tried to rebuild a relationship, but feeling like her father was telling lies to gain his own publicity, she cut him off.
