Maya Angelou is one of the authors that defined modern African-American literature — celebrated for her active participation in the Civil Rights movement and her role in giving voice to disenfranchised communities throughout the United States, she is the author of several perennial bestsellers that remain firmly entrenched on required reading lists in the school system. Angelou was invited to read one of her poems at Bill Clinton’s presidential inauguration – the first author to be given that opportunity since the 1961 Kennedy inauguration.
