Yesterday, Keri Hilson made headlines as she premiered her new single “Breaking Point”. Although her new single was mentioned, the media seemed to gravitate more towards her new look than the actual song, itself. The newly blonde singer took a different approach with her new music and a new look; and even for those who didn’t like the somewhat gothic looking Keri, the change was still noticed.

It’s always refreshing to see a transformation in someone’s appearance. Who can forget how pop star Rihanna went from the cute island girl to bold fashionista?  It’s called reinventing your look; and for those of who aren’t in the spotlight, it’s something we can benefit from as well.

Sometimes change can give you the attitude or extra boost of confidence you didn’t know you had. Why do you think after breakups or during major life changing events, women choose to switch up their style? It’s signifies a new start. If you’re in need of a reinvention of your look, try these 5 steps to begin your process.

Switch up your hairstyle:  It its long, cut it. If it’s short… buy it? Hair is probably the most noticeable and instant change a woman can undergo. Many times when women want to change their look, the hair is the first to be altered. If you’re afraid to cut your locs or adding extensions just isn’t your thing, changing your hair color is also an alternate option.

Experiment with makeup: Makeup is fun. Some women choose not to play with makeup because of its unnatural feeling;  but makeup is the grown woman’s chance to play ‘dressup’. Experiment with different colors depending on the occasion. And if you’re really feeling bold, don the infamous red lip color. Every woman, no matter the skin tone or complexion should try red lipstick at least once in her life.

Update your wardrobe: I could write a book on the recession proof way to update your wardrobe and accessories would be the overall theme. Accessories can take a basic ‘fit and make it fashionable. From stylish belts, shoes, and handbags, to bracelets, necklaces, and rings, accessories can be a woman on a budget’s best friend.

Have a fashion icon for inspiration: Is there someone whose style you admire? Use them as a source of inspiration in your reinvention process. Make sure your style is your own, but it’s good to draw ideas from others whose style you like.

Have fun with your style: Clothes, makeup, and your personal style should ultimately be a reflection of you. If you’re aren’t a ‘rocker chic’ and work in corporate America, shaving your head on one side may not be appropriate. But still, even for those who choose a more sophisticated  style, playing around with different colors and styles is fun.
